It had a lot of extra “office” modules connected to it that were removed for Regula’s refit. It would use the existing model, yes, but extra work would be required to make it accurate.
Absolutely! As beautiful a job as they did with the XL Reliant, it still turns my stomach to look at the XL refit, like it was a slap-dash rush-job done by a college intern in a couple of days, based on bad source information.
It's been a while since I've hurt my eyes to look at it but, to my recollection, all they would really need to do is fix the primary hull structure and the decal scales/positions. The rest of it is pretty serviceable as-is.

Yep. Those are quite nice.
And, if you got the coin for it, the big 1:350 scale Tomy refit, which is absolutely beautiful (despite some of its reported electrical flaws).
And honestly, there was also the 2003 Art Asylum/Diamond Select collectible that was pretty damn good for a mass-produced item.

My friend, Thomas Sasser, mastered the ships for Art Asylum/Diamond Select- he also worked on the 1:350 Refit model kit. He had a great eye for proportion and detail
Ah!! I knew of his involvement in the 1:350 refit for Polar Lights, but I didn't know about him working with AA/DS with their designs. That 100% explains why they look so good!

I saw his prototypes as they evolved- his biggest frustration in dealing with AA/DS was the fact they were totally ignorant about the subjects. I remember how they changed the Enterprise-D trying to "improve it". They had the lifeboat hatches change size and position, forming racing 'strobe stripes' that circled the hull like decorations- they had no idea they were supposed to be uniform hatch covers for escape pods...
I sold mine to 2nd and Charles. Got about 1/8th what I paid for it.
And yeah, the saucer section was the big problem. I could have lived with the decal issues. But the incorrect bridge/deck 2 piece and saucer rim issue was too much.
That same thought-process would explain the weird size-changing lifeboats on Playmates’ Enterprise-E.
This may sound silly but it is worthwhile letting more of the model yellow so it turn into NCC-7100 Ready Room style?
I too have the AA/DST first release Enterprise-A - which is gorgeous and utilises a harder / firmer plastic (insert ‘that’s what she said’ joke here), which is not translucent like latter offerings were.
Fanhome would do well to release an improved Enterprise Refit, IMO. Having said that, the Corgi Enteprise Refit and 1701-A are fantastic options also.

Mine had the same problem (though, ironically, mine yellowed while it was in a box for four months during a move, so it was chemical outgassing and not sunlight). The trouble is, the nacelles and impulse engine were molded in transparent plastic and had the white base-color painted on, so it's visibly mismatched and doesn't get a kind of old-timey patina effect. I've thought about getting it painted or electroplated for that TNG display-model look, silver or gold (I think the retconned ready room model from PIC where it was brushed gold rather than yellow looked sharp), but that's very much a "someday" project.
My AA NX-01 has the same issue, but the heavy paneling and darker base color disguises it, so you have to look a bit closer to notice the nacelles aren't quite the same color as the body.
