It says the oxygen content of the atmosphere is 78%. There must be some supercharged plants on that planet, can't imagine the fire hazard of living on that planet. LOL

I'll bet they have "no smoking" signs everywhere.

No wonder the insectoid natives are so large. On Earth in real life the prehistoric oxygen content of the atmosphere was so high that dragonflies and other insects very often grew to the sizes of large birds.

My thoughts went to the multi-armed Green Martians from ERB's Barsoom.

I was thinking of the insectoid Martians in Quatermass and the Pit (aka Five Million Years to Earth).

Star Trek has been paying homage to (copying) other properties since it started. Similarities to Forbidden Planet aside, Balance of Terror is basically The Enemy Below in space. TNG had its Die Hard episode with Starship Mine. Voyager had Janeway basically playing Ripley from Aliens in Macrocosm. TNG's The Enemy and Enterprise's Dawn are both essentially Enemy Mine.

This isn't some new thing Strange New Worlds invented. Star Trek has been borrowing familiar stories and putting its own spin on them for over 60 years.

Heck, "Wolf in the Fold" is basically Robert Bloch ripping off himself, since it's a sci-fi variant of his classic short story, "Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper," which he had adapted for Boris Karloff's THRILLER just a few years before reworking it again for TOS.


And, of course, "The Enemy Within" is pretty much a sci-fi riff on Jekyll & Hyde, not to mention any number of other "evil twin" stories and movies.

And Norman Spinrad was deliberately riffing on Moby-Dick when he wrote "The Doomsday Machine," with Decker intended to be a space-age Captain Ahab.

Etc.

Speaking of Decker I wonder if he only became comodore because Pike turned it down.

It's pays not to look to closely. 65 million years ago Mars looked just like it does today.

Oops, no water no Martians.

Doesn't distract though from it being good story telling and fun to watch.

And I've always been completely fine with that. It's not a PBS Nova episode or Carl Sagan documentary series. It's costume drama and social commentary. The day I rely on Star Trek to make me feel good about science is the day I've failed both.
