So the BBC have announced they're cancelling Blankety Blank*, Celebrity Mastermind and Live at the Apollo**

They're aiming to save £100 million a year. Would have been very easy to axe Who so speaks volumes that they haven't.

Do they need to axe it to save money if they're selling it out and letting someone else foot the bill? If someone does buy the tender and makes more Who, does that cost the BBC anything? I'd have thought it would only cost the new owner/studio/producer?

They can cross that bridge if/when it happens? Since no one has bought Who yet, why would that matter? The point stands; Doctor Who is not costing the BBC anything atm, because the BBC is not producing any Doctor Who show. No production = no cost, no cost = no need to axe it.

BBC is a subsidiary of the BBC, not the exact same entity.

Strictly speaking BBC Studios is fairly competing for the show.
But if no one else makes an offer, then I guess it will go to them by default.
So one way or the other we will get more Doctor Who.

If they're selling Doctor Who to avoid paying for it themselves and to earn money from the sale, wouldn't they be really unhappy if BBC Studios won the bidding? Seing as that would cost them money rather than save/make money?

wasn't the cancellation in 86 partly about freeing up funds so the BBC could produce a lavish news soap (Eldorado?) that was a massive flop.

I hope they either go for a hard reboot or make the new Doctor the 87th Doctor or something that is so far removed from the previous incarnations that they don't matter anymore. I loved the previous show but I feel like they have to start over fresh and must use the past as a crutch anymore so no more past companion or previous Doctor appearances and no more Daleks or Cybermen for at least the first 5 seasons. So sick of them!

The point is that whoever wins the tender should be the best choice (probably means the cheapest but hopefully it's slightly more nuanced than that) and if that's BBC Studios that's fine, but at least the BBC can prove it was a competitive process and the company who can provide the best value for money to licence payers won the bid.

Casualty recently went out to tender and even Silent Witness will be going out to tender.

To comply with the law. The BBC Charter and Agreement requires that 100% of returning series be open to competitive bids by 2027.

So even though BBC Studios wants to make Doctor Who, that doesn't matter. There has to be competitive bids for it and they need to have the winning bid.

I feel the opposite here, we've got 60+ years of history and I think it would be better to use and embrace that history. If you're going to pretend like that whole history never happened, and aren't going to use things that make Doctor Who Doctor Who, then you might as well just create a whole new show. I'm still pissed we never saw 15 take on the Daleks or the Cybermen.
