Spoilers Spider-Noir discussion thread

Well Sony can use the Peter Parker version. Because they own all the film rights to Spider-Man. Disney is basically leasing Spider-Man. The reason they arent using Peter Parker is more that people think if the character name as an adolescent. Ben Reilly isn't known to anyone that doesn't read thr comics so it was a good move. It gives the show a more independent feel now from Spider-Man.

Yup definitely a feel from movies like The Maltese Falcon and Laura and then with a taste of the old superhero serials from the 30s and 40s like Captain Marvel, The Phantom and Superman thrown in the mix. Im only on the wnd episode but its great. The best show ive seen in a long time. Nicholas Cage is doing a bang up job as the character. So far hes more pulp detective than superhero. I really like that.

lol now i wonder what howard wolowitz from cbs big bang theory aka simon helberg is gonna say about nick cages trademark acting styles in spider noir

since simon helberg is known for impersonations of famous people and his most famous one is his nick cage impersonation

Just binged the last six episodes. Fantastic series. B&W is definitely the way to go. When is season 2? Whenever it is, it’s not soon enough. 10/10 for the whole thing.

I just finished the second episode, loved it and then realized that a second season might be upto two years away. So im savoring it and will watch it a bit slower. Lol. But I'll rematch again before the second season. Im also rating ot a 10/10.

Simon should get a guest episode at least. Lol

I'm about half way through the show and I'm enjoying it, but Nic Cage is really holding this show up on his back. The actual story is pretty mediocre, we barely get any Spider action (and when we do he has a body count that Punisher would be jealous of for some reason) and the villains suck (and the ones with powers are all extremely cheap looking). I also can't say I'm a fan of the "genre" elements either, a lot of generic Noir plot beats are just boring and I've been so happy to see smoking banished from most TV/Movies that its gross and distracting to see so much of it here (and no I don't care if its "realistic", the show has people with super powers so its already not a show focused on realism)..

With any other actor this would be a 4-5/10 show, but Nic Cage drags it up to a 7/10. I hope the back half of the show has a bit less of Cage having long chats with the singer and more of him actually doing something, but if nothing else Cage is putting everything into the role so its fun to watch.

Just finished the season and I think I prefer the B&W especially if they start to lean more into deeper shadows and contrast for the noir stylism. The I wonder if color version's supersaturation is purposeful to mimic the saturation of a "colorized" classic film. I still am able to see some additional interesting details in the color version, like
the color of Flint's fused glass hand when it gets melted by MegaWatt. I wonder if they thought to crush the glass back into sand before they cured him so he could reabsorb it and get his hand back. In the funeral scene, he keeps that hand in his pocket so we don't know for sure
I'm interested in seeing where the 2nd season takes us!

I’m enjoying it. I’m watching the colour version. Surprised to see Andrew J Robinson in this. I thought he retired.

Just finished the season yesterday, it was pretty fun! I love the style of and have quite a large number of old noirs in my collection, so it was black and white all the way for me! Maybe I'll come back and revisit a bit of it in color later on, but when watching a few clips in both I preferred the black and white version.

It was a lot of fun seeing Andrew Robinson again too. I haven't seen any of his recent work, but it only took a second to recognize him here.

I did find it interesting that in 1933 in this universe a lot of things match up with ours (tail end of Prohibition, Great Depression, FDR in office, WW1 being 15 years prior), but a lot of movies were coming out a few years early! Ben was talking about Humphrey Bogart in the same sentence as James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson, which most likely wouldn't have happened until the early 40s, and he was also watching a Cagney movie that came out in '36.

I also thought that the color version looking a bit like three-strip Technicolor was a nice touch.

Maybe its share a history with Edith Keeler's Earth. ;)

All three were making movies on the 1930s.

Yes, I'm aware! My comment was about Bogart's popularity in 1933, when the episode is set. He wasn't getting many big roles until later in the decade, and most of what he was getting before that wasn't the tough guy persona that's being referenced in the scene.

Well he dud a John Ford movie with Spencer Tracy in 1930 called Up the River and in 32 co starred in a romantic movie called l
Love Affair. Obviously not the Bogie roles he became known for but his popularity was starting to grow. Of course his breakout film was The Petrified Forest on 36. But who know maybe Ben is a Bogart fan already. I still like all his little shootouts to Bogart.Cage mimics Bogart from The Big Sleep when he puts on glasses to gain entrance to.his old apartment and says "Hmmm". A decent bogart impersonation. Lol

Yes, that was a fun little nod! It was nice seeing all the little references to the movies, I should have started marking them down because there were a lot of them throughout the show.

Yeah. Its really cool. Im guessing ive missed a lot of them. Ive seen a lot of old noir films but certainly not all. Hopefully someone will make a list. Any movies they reference that I haven't seen I'll probably watch.

Well Sony can use the Peter Parker version. Because they own all the film rights to Spider-Man.
That's not how it works, at least in this case. Marvel have a strict list of things that Spider-Man and Peter Parker can be shown to do. Sony's current license does not let them do just anything they feel like.

Just a note, apparently they used the name Ben Reilly instead of Peter Parker because Marvel has a list of things Peter Parker can't be depicted to do, such as smoking, while Sony can do pretty much whatever they want with Ben Reilly. Also why they call him Spider instead of Spider-Man.
According to the character integrity obligations, Spider-Man ("whether Peter Parker or an alternative Spider-Man character") may not smoke tobacco or abuse alcohol. Though both of those things are permitted when Spider-Man wears the black/symbiote suit, so it could be "The Spider" or maybe it's actually Noir's color choices that allow him to puff and booze. :)

That's all assuming that the contract hasn't changed in the years since.
