The Battlestar Galactica (TOS & NuBSG) Appreciation and Remembrance Thread

Point of Order: Count Iblis never claimed to be a Cylon - just that the Cylons recorded and used his voice for all versions of the Cylon Imperious Leader.;)
There is an alternate theory. In exchange for the advanced technology that was given to them by Iblis (that eventually destroyed them) they were forced to essentially give him their “souls”. The Imperious Leader was the only Cylon to have a third brain, which could be a piece of Iblis himself, controlling Impy and, by proxy, the entire Cylon hive civilization. Hence, the not-coincidental identical voice. Sparse-little is known about the original biological Cylons, aside from a single rough sketch, shown once on-screen as an introduction to a repackaged BSG tele-movie. “Experiment in Terra”, I think it was called. Much about them have been manufactured after-the-fact by books and comics.

I was 10 when the original aired so, I was the target audience. Even at 12, I knew G:80 was crap. I didn't see reruns for maybe 20 years and when I did, I could see all the troubles with the original show. (it has a painful production story that explains a lot). Somehow, I got ahold of a pdf of the 2003 Miniseries script 6 months before it aired and was blown away right there. Then I watched it and wasn't disappointed. Loved all 4 years of the show and am convinced it was a turning point for how SF is done on TV. Just look at the stark difference between the look and feel of SG1 vs. Universe. I'm elated that, all these years later, we still have no explanation for significant plot points and are still talking about it.

True. For as "incomplete" as I and some others here found many of the mysteries originally posed (and left unanswered) by NuBSG, it does still hold a firm grasp of current popular culture, as does the original, to some extent. There would be no NuBSG as we know it, if at all, without TOS.

I am curious if we'll ever see anyone take up the property again, after so many fits and starts since the last one wrapped, but I suspect the reason why RDM's version resonated so well when it did was its temporal proximity to the 9/11 attacks, which heavily informed its plot. TOS was influenced by Pearl Harbor, occurring a more distant 30-some years prior to its first run, but still remembered clearly by older members of the audience at the time.

Unfortunately, it is a rather dark subject involving sneak attacks, holocausts and genocide, for both shows. I just hope it doesn't take such another similar mass-casualty event IRL to make it relevant again.

I, being the animal lover I am, always felt bad about for dog on New Caprica who's bowel they kept flipping over as a signal to the resistance. lmao

The atmospheric drop/jump at New Caprica that you mentioned probably singularly shortened the G's lifespan by several years but, yeah, probably one of the most amazingly well-done kick-ass sequences in sci-fi history.

Really though, I think those vipers would have been blow to pieces when they launched. But rule of a cool trumps here, I'm all for it.

Lee sacrificing Pegasus was also a great scene

There are a ton of clips on the official BSG youtube channel. They've even started posting clips from the original series.

The Vipers would probably have been fine; the Galactica appeared to start its drop from a near-stop (relative to the surface) so really it wouldn't have been subjected to as much stress as the show depicted. The FTL system must allow you to choose your exit velocity -- else they wouldn't be able to jump into and out of orbits -- and there's no reason to jump into the atmosphere at orbital velocity, so it definitely shouldn't have been on fire either. But, Rule of Cool and all that.

All I can say to show how great i think nuBSG is, is that the entire two episodes involving the arrival of Pegasus and nearly all of the scenes where we saw the crew of Pegasus, I felt uncomfortable, often even slightly sick. That is how well done it was.

Michelle Forbes was so great as Admiral Cain. One of the more scary characters I've seen in a sci fi series.

It's funny, the Evac raptors from the Pegasus jumped before the collision, so Lee has no idea that he actually took out two basestars.

Right? I mean, Nana Visitor as Kira Nerys is legendary, but I have to admit, I do often wonder what Forbes as Ro on DS9 could have been like.....

I think we got a glimpse of that in Picard. I've kind of soured on Season 3 in the last few years (Still think it's the best season but not by much) but that episode with Ro was the best episode in that season. It would have been great to see more of that Ro.

There was so much contrivance to get the gang back together. Also, if every season was supposed to have been about the Borg then I wish we were just told up front. I think I threw something at my television when the "big reveal" of Season 3 was exactly what it looked like it was going to be.

That's why I don't like the season that much now. It was like they were trying to tell a DS9 story and forgot we should have gotten a TNG story. Also, if they wanted to do the Borg for all 3 years, killing off Hugh was an even bigger mistake than it was at the time.

I agree--killing off Hugh considering everything he had gone through was bad enough. There were so many bad choices made in the Picard series that could have easily been caught and fixed ahead of time. You want to get the crew back together in the final season? Call them in. Don't try to write a story where you think they are introduced gradually due to plot reasons. It's too cute.

I think I would have been okay with Hugh's death if it had felt a bit less perfunctory, in a season of perfunctory passings. Granted Seven barely knew him, but did we even get a scene of anyone else reacting to hearing of his passing? He was one of my favorite TNG guest characters and it was upsetting to see him swept under the rug like that.

I agree, though, that given the ultimate Borgcentric shape of the series (sigh), killing him off when they did was an even larger error.

As for the episode where Ro returns...call it damning with faint praise if you wish, but I'll say that wasn't just one of the best episodes of S3, but was easily one of the best episodes of PIC entire.

To get back on topic though...I think I watched the original BSG, but was too young to remember it now. I watched fragments of the early episodes, possibly the pilot, of NuBSG on a JetBlue flight years ago, but that was no way to experience that show, and I dozed off in any case. Picked it up on Blu-ray despite hearing some warnings about the later seasons, and I really enjoyed it, including the finale. I don't think it's perfect, but I think the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Both series are available for streaming right now. I believe they're on Amazon. I'd recommend watching at least a selection of the major arc based episodes of the original as they have their own thing going on and they do inform one's viewing of the reboot series. I really enjoyed BSG all the way through and liked that some things just weren't explained. I still think the final is one of the best endings to a sci-fi show ever.

Honestly, maybe at some point, but I'm running a huge backlog on TV shows right now, so it'll have to wait (and I'm slightly curious, but only slightly).

As for NuBSG though...as LOST demonstrated for me, I'm ultimately far more concerned with character work and with the overall entertainment value of the show than I am with whether every mystery ultimately gets answered. Indeed, I suggest that people watch LOST as a show about the characters with sci-fi/mystery stuff as a backdrop rather than the other way around.

I'm the same way as long as it seems like everything could fit together and there is nothing overtly contradictory with what has been established. A sense of character and thematic closure is much more important to me. Lost is also still one of my favorite programs.
