Is it time to put Star Trek to rest?

Time is never on your side no matter what your age. Tomorrow is never guaranteed.

Umm yeah. Time meaning that when you are younger you have more of it as you get older you have less. Pretty simple concept. Of course People can die at any age but as you get older your chances increase. Thus you no longer have time on your side. So you can't waste time sitting around the house all day watching TV for example.

IIRC, the chances of dying doubles every eight years.

It’s quite clear that this era of CBSTrek is now over, just like BermanTrek ended with TATV. I don’t see Skydance doing anything Trek-wise for the foreseeable future.

I think the parent company wants to take Trek back to the big screen and likely don’t want to compete with themselves.

I have very little faith that we’re going to see another Star Trek film anytime soon, even from Skydance.

Or maybe they just want to figure out how they are going to restructure their various new platforms/businesses and wait until it's known who will be in charge of what exactly (streaming? Movie? CBS? Linear cable?) before they decide if, and if yes how, the franchise has a place in it?

That sounds plausible.

agreed. I think starting the day after SNW ends next year we are gonna have several years of a hiatus from Trek. Wouldnt surprise me to see that movie currently in development get scrapped as well.

In fact, I think there is a fair chance SNWs series finale will be the final anything of Trek for Paramount. If the merger does go thru, I could see them selling Trek to Amazon, Netflix or Disney just out of necessity.

Really? Somewhere I read Paramount considers Star Trek part of their "crown jewels".

That was a long time ago.

I read that in the context of P+ starting in Germany 2022.

But I don't remember if that was an actual quote or ... "speculation" by a witty online journalist to pimp his article.

ChatGPT:

Yes—very clearly. Paramount Global considers Star Trek to be one of its core “crown jewels.”
Why Star Trek has this status
1. Long-term brand value
Since the launch of Star Trek: The Original Series, the franchise has become one of the most enduring in entertainment. It spans TV series, feature films, books, games, and merchandising—over nearly 60 years.
2. Strategically important for streaming
For Paramount+, Star Trek is one of the key flagship properties:
Series such as Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds were specifically developed to attract and retain subscribers.
In effect, the franchise functions as a “house brand” for the platform.
3. Comparable to other “crown jewels”
Within Paramount, Star Trek stands alongside major properties such as:

Mission: Impossible
Transformers
And, on the television side, long-running hits like NCIS
A key distinction
Unlike many film franchises, Star Trek is primarily a TV-driven universe with a steady stream of new content—making it especially valuable for a streaming service.
Conclusion
Yes—from both an economic and strategic perspective, Star Trek clearly ranks among Paramount’s most important and valuable assets. Without it, the position of Paramount+ in the streaming market would be significantly weaker.

;)

My guess is, we'll get a Star Trek series run by Quentin Tarantino on HBO. :P
What they should really do (no, not really!!!) is make a Quintin Tarantino TV Movie on HBO mixing and matching clips from TOS, taking them out of context, and make something totally wacky out of it!

This is an oldie but a goodie...
