He was a red shirt who we only learned anything about this episode.

His death was never going to have anything but minimal impact to the viewer.
No he's not a "Red Shirt". He was a supporting character thru out the first six episodes. You're great at lore but suck at plot, drama and character. Most deaths in Star Trek are at the same level as B'Avi's. If fact most happen to one off guests stars. If done right there is impact.

I mean can the average person name him after 6 episodes?

All of the War College characters are the equivalent of the Discovery crew in S1/S2, there but basically unknown.

That's just the reality of TV though. Unless they're trying to trick the audience like saying Michelle Yeoh is the main star of Discovery and the captain of the ship only to kill her in the first episode, every member of the main cast has built in plot armor and won't die.

I pulled out my middle school yearbook and we had a computer class for students who wanted to learn CAD and programming. This was in 1985.
My father's construction/real estate company was using computers around the same time for blueprints.

Tomlinson in Balance of Terror being a prime example

Irrelevant as to the impact of his death while watching the episode. The average person doesn't have a clue who "Edith Keeler" is either. But when they watch COTEF they feel her death.

My first computer was given to me by my friend's dad in 1996 when I turned 18. It was a decrepit and huge old thing that used the legitimately floppy 5 1/2 inch floppy disks. It couldn't do much except word processing and printing.

Memory Alpha says Dzolo‘s name was spoken in “Series Acclimation Mil”, but it doesn‘t give that information for B‘Avi. I wanna say they did speak his name in “Come, Let‘s Away”, though.

Ive just checked, and youre right, he gets referred to by name re Tiny Fireflies.

They did indeed speak B'Avi's name in this episode. It actually caught me off guard and made me ask "who?" since the characters pronounce it "Baw-vee" while I had been pronouncing it previously "Bav-eee." Fortunately, there was enough context for me to figure it out quickly enough.

At first, I thought they said "Bobby," and it confused the hell out of me.

My first MSDOS computer was made by NEC (8001) purchased new, by me, in 1983. I used it to program in USCD Pascal, MS Fortran and Compiled Basic, when I was going to college and university.

The first time was right here, I think.

I guess that‘s one of the benefits of being used to watching the show with closed captioning on, because for me it was immediately clear what she said and who she referred to. Although I must say I‘m not sure I would have understood so effortlessly if talking about him here hadn‘t primed me on the fact that this was his name. Damn, it‘s such a shame he‘s gone already. Would have loved to learn more about him and his relationship to Dzolo. They had an interesting dynamic.

By the way, I noticed that curiously some characters refer to Lura Thok as “Commander Lura”, whereas I would have assumed it would be “Commander Thok”. Both Kelrec and Tomov do so early in “Come, Let‘s Away”. Is “Lura” supposed to be her last name? Or is it just a shortened version of “Lura Thok”, which is just not construced as any combination of given name plus family name?

But her command code was Thok something-something which would suggest a surname there.

If her name were Lura'thok in a more traditional Jem'Hadar way it'd make more sense because then people are just shortening it more out of laziness and not out of convention.

Her file, being reviewed by Chancellor Ake, has her new Number 1 listed as Thok, Lura.

I didn't mind how they killed off B'Avi. Sure, it would've been better if they had given him a bit more to do in the first five episodes, but...it's only been five episodes! One of the mains wasn't going to die (so soon) and I can't think of anyone who would have a bigger impact other than maybe Kyle or D'Zolo. I don't think they want to ice Kyle because they have plans for him and Jay-Den, and this sets up D'Zolo on something like a bit of a redemption arc (since she's been irredeemably mean up until now).

Ideally, we'd still be dealing with 90's-length seasons, and get some more time with the side characters to develop an impression beyond "Hey, there's a Vulcan!" But it's miles better than the gruff instructor who dies almost immediately.
