Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Given she was openly laughing I'd say that was more a case of her knowing her boss would let her get away with it.
Still violating bodily anatomy in a way that would ruin the life of people from certain cultures.
I think you have to take SFA as the comedy show that it's (mostly) intended as; the reason the arch singles out Caleb is because it's funny, rather than any coherent in-universe explanation. Same for why Thok goes so hard on him on sight - he's the protag in a comedy series, tons of bad stuff is gonna happen to him for the joke.

Or that she did nothing wrong. Sometimes people don't like something and just can't say they don't like it. They have to make it seem like something is wrong with the product when there really isn't.

Overall, SFA matches much of the rest of CBS Trek. It is bland and over reliant on nostalgia. The mechanisms they attempt to use are fine, they just don't generally know how to make them dramatically interesting. At least, for me.

Comedy is a great structure for an Academy show. Drama and jokes is my favorite.

Making a character into a comedic buttmonkey can be done without punching down at them.

Case in point, Brad Boimler.

In theory a show like Starfleet Academy could run indefinitely. Grey’s Anatomy, a medical drama set in a teaching hospital has been running for 22 seasons, every other season bringing in fresh interns, while the former interns move up to become attending doctors (or leave the show/hospital). If they do something like that on SFA and introduce first year cadets each season, they could keep it fresh for quite a while. Not saying that's how they should do it, but they certainly could. :)

that's an exciting prospect. If they lower the budget a bit , this show could go on indefinitely. I don't see an Oscar winner like Holly Hunter sticking around for 22 seasons, though. I'm still amazed they got her in the first place, and we are getting quite a lot more of her than i thought. Maybe in later seasons, Mary Wiseman as Tilly can take over her role as chancellor

She is still referred to as an instructor some 30 years later where she's the longest serving Academy staff member ever but there's wiggle room there with what instructor means, there's no rule that says the chancellor can't also teach a class.

Holly is 67. She would be 89. Lol. Plus the show will never get to n 22 seasons. Its a teen melodrama. Lol

There's a difference between people:
  • Not liking it because they don't think it's good
  • Not liking it because it's not what they wanted from a Trek show
  • Not liking it because they're bigots and are actively fighting culture wars
TNG may have got some of the first two, but not the third. Some will try to hide it within the other reasons, but there are plenty who are shamelessly open about it. Elon Musk shared a moronic tweet attacking SFA on culture wars grounds, which attracted thousands of likes. That sort of thing leads to brigading and review bombing (note the abysmal IMDb rating).

It matters because anyone not aware of that context who looks the show up with a view to watching it will be deterred. That the show's chances of success and ultimately damages Trek's future.
Only in a minor way at best. The general audience does not pay attention to any of the review bombing, tweets, and youtube videos. My example for this is the Barbie movie, it was railed against by everyone including very large podcasters and youtube channels. It also got review bombed, yet it has mostly positive reception and grossed over 1.5 billion.
The haters are just a very loud minority that have little effect on the mass market. If a product fails, it fails because it was bad,

I watched the first episode and half the second. Its a teen melodrama. Sorry.
