Are you "aging out" of Star Trek?

I've found myself watching older trek less than before... but that's expected because I am very busy with other things.

These days, I certainly won't pass up new Trek if it comes along, but I've gotten into the groove of creating my own stuff (specifically my VOY AU), so I'm pretty engrossed in it still.

Am I aging out of Star Trek? I'm in my mid 60s. I'm not aging out but there are a few different factors at work:
- I don't have streaming or cable, so I am limited to what's available on discs. So I'm not seeing the newest shows as soon as they come out.
- It's not so much a matter of age but there are certainly some series that I love dearly, others I have mixed feelings about, and still others that weren't even worth watching past the first few episodes. The ones that I love have characters that have some depth to them, that I like or at least find interesting.

I tried to interest my daughter in watching TOS on its 50th anniversary. She went along for a couple of episodes, but was eventually put off. Too few women, and the women who were there were working in very subordinate roles taking few decisions. I know and my daughter knows, Star Trek was breaking new ground in the mid 60s having women on the ship at all. I'm prepared to overlook it based on when it was made, but I don't blame her at all.

Yes, people give Disco a lot of stick. But the thing is, Picard did a lot of the same things people accuse Disco of. They just give it a pass, because of familiar TNG characters.

Which things/attributes in both series, and in which episodes? Maybe people questioning the former series will compare both and find either context separating both or that their previous reactions were wrong? At least for some elements, I'm pretty sure it's more than just "familiar TNG characters" being the sole context here.

Nope. You're not alone. Nope, I'm not aging out of Trek and neither are you.

I thought I was. I thought this over 20 years ago. And not just Trek. My favorite band made a follow up to their epic concept album from 1988. I hated it. George Lucas finally decides to make episodes 1 - 3. I really disliked them. I don't want to think about Episodes 7-9. JJ Abrams makes 3 Star Trek movies that I am not motivated to watch ever again after my first viewing. Man, when did I turn into the old man that thinks anything after 1999 is crap?

Then there were new things I loved. Andor is breathtaking. Mandalorean, Solo, Rogue One makes me want to play with Star Wars figures again. Prodigy and Lower Decks were entertaining and I actually enjoyed Revenge of the Sith and Star Trek Beyond.

I decided I'm not aging out, it's just those in charge now are not in tune with my interests. I do like modern series such as Expanse, Foundation, For All Mankind, so I can get excited about modern story telling. I'm not stuck in the past. Trek (and all of modern entertainment) has simply gotten so fractured or Balkanized or pigeon holed. The amount of creators with their own ideas, own visions, and own tales to tell is just exponentially greater than last century. Couple that with the money people focusing tighter on making the most money by appealing to the broadest fan base and you get results that are simply not for everyone.

I like SNW the best of modern Trek, but that's not a high bar.

Eh6, maybe I am getting old. Young minds, fresh ideas, be tolerant.
I have to ask…..was that album Operation Mindcrime? Cuz yea Mindcrime Part 2 was a huge dud for me too, and when the band played both albums back to back I was done after Eyes of a Stranger.

Back on track, I just think a lot of the newer Trek wasnt made for me the way the other stuff was, up to even Star Trek Enterprise which I loved, and I even really liked all the Kelvin movies. But Discovery couldn’t hold my attention, the mirror universe stuff got a look than got bored with it again. I loved Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Prodigy. Picards first two seasons had strong starts but than got awful, whereas season 3 started decent than got awesome at the end.

That being said, all it would take to get me deep in the franchise is more of a return to the TNG, DS9 style. As you saw even the new stuff has some highs, just also more lows than there was when I was watching the 80s and 90s shows.

66 next week. Obviously grew up on TOS and the movies and was thrilled with TNG when it came out and liked everything thru Ent. Enjoyed the Kelvin movies for what they are -- action adventure movies set in the Trek Universe. Then came streaming Trek. Yeah not a big fan of season arcs (besides DS9 Dominion War). To me season long arcs cover bad writing because you get strung along with no payoff unless they absolutely stick the landing -- which almost never happens. Prodigy not for me. Lower Decks was okay and amusing but not something I'd watch again. Hated Disc after season 2 and thought the first two seasons of Picard were boring and pointless. Love SNW but for God's sake less "funny" episodes in seasons 4 & 5.
So not aging out and will try any new Trek iterations, but I'm amazed how much I still love TOS.

I'm definitely sad that the old 22-26 episodes per season format, along with the morality play approach, is gone ... but there is much about the new Trek I like, especially about SNW and LD.

And it's not a new thing for me that I don't like *all* new Star Trek ... even back in the 90s, I made the experience I didn't like VOY.

So I guess hating DSC does not mean I hate new Trek in general, but it's just one variety of Trek I don't like ... there is and will be more I enjoy.

I’m 57, and I’d say I haven’t aged out of Trek, but I have aged out of belief that the real world could get there, metaphorically speaking. Which is maybe ironic, considering that Trek had World War III.

But I’ve continued to enjoy (and see a fairly consistent worldview) in all of the shows (with the inexplicable exception of the Section 31 movie). Most of the complaints I see about Discovery, Picard etc often look like they kinda boil down to unconscious code for “I’m not the younger person I was when ‘my’ Trek aired, and I hate that! So, uh, here’s a reason, yeah!”

Started as a fan in '92. There are certain things about newer Trek that annoy me. I still enjoy some episodes. I haven't reached the point where I don't give the new shows a chance...yet.
