DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

I'm not familiar with him but perhaps it's a good thing to get a lesser known actor to play Brainiac. Might help the character stand out more instead of focusing "Oh, it's that one guy in deep make-up and/or CGI!"

Although, to be fair, I don't think most people did that with Josh Brolin when he played Thanos but I think that was aided by his unique voice being a standout part of that performance.

Lex Luthor is so much more than an occasional villain. He is basically part of the regular Superman supporting cast. Even when not the central villain of the story. Been true since the mid 80s when reimagined as a businessman. But I would argue it was informally in place long before that.

Luthor has been a regular on every Superman or Superboy, even Supergirl tv series. 50s George Reeves only exception. In Superman II Hackman is really a supporting character too.

Yes. I would argue that only Lois and Clark himself are more important. Carping about the frequency of Lex’s appearances in adaptations is bizarre to me.

That said, part of me is glad we’re getting Brainiac so that constant complaint can finally die. (And Lex is still there. :) )

It’s an easy go to joke.

That's an overstatement; in most Superman or Superboy series, he was only a recurring villain, not a regular. The only time he's ever been a main-cast regular were in season 1 of Lois & Clark, seasons 1-7 of Smallville, and season 4 of Superman and Lois. Otherwise, he's been a semi-regular at most, i.e. a character who appears frequently on an ongoing basis but not on a weekly basis or as a main-title cast member. And sometimes his appearances have been more infrequent.

And the Reeves Adventures of Superman is not the sole exception. Luthor did not appear in the 1966 Adventures of Superboy, nor in the 2006 Legion of Super Heroes series which was headlined by a young Superman.

Luthor does deserve credit as probably the first comic-book villain to be adapted to the screen, in the 1950s serial Atom Man vs. Superman. There's no denying his importance, so there's no need to pad his resume.

Outside of Superman and Lois, most of Luthor's live-action appearances were pretty lame until Gunn's movie. Tons of potential wasted in movie after movie. I guess the first year of Lois & Clark was halfway decent, but very limited in scope.
