I'm not familiar with him but perhaps it's a good thing to get a lesser known actor to play Brainiac. Might help the character stand out more instead of focusing "Oh, it's that one guy in deep make-up and/or CGI!"
Although, to be fair, I don't think most people did that with Josh Brolin when he played Thanos but I think that was aided by his unique voice being a standout part of that performance.
