Have you ever given up on a Trek series? If so, what was the last straw for you?

I've never stopped watching a Star Trek series, but I "gave up" on expecting VOY and DSC would really become good or take a place in my heart as TOS, TNG or DS9.

For large parts of the later seasons of VOY and DSC, watching them was more an act of completist obsession than genuine emotional engagement.

However, after all these years, VOY has grown on me and I have a milder view on it now, than I used to. Precondition for that was that I would even rewatch Star Trek I didn't like at first... which I do because there are times when even bad Star Trek satisfies me more than other shows.

I may have already given up on Starfleet Academy. The trailer I saw showed to cadets kissing. Th made my fear of it being Starfleet 90210 stronger. Still, like I have with all the series - except the animated one not called Lower Decks - give it three seasons to impress me. Unless Paramount's new owners cancel all of Star Trek because it's too woke.

A show about teenagers, yes I should expect kissingbut; these are kids who for all intents and purposes are in school makes me afraid it'll be less Star Trek and more 90210

I have not watched Discovery Season 4 or 5 and have no plans to. I also do not intend to watch Academy.

I gave up on Section 31 after watching the opening 11 minutes.

I'm afraid Starfleet Academy might address a target audience I don't belong to, much like PRO. But it could still be decent.

Also, I'm afraid the series could be too much like DSC, and that's the Star Trek series I like least.

But I will watch it and am open to be positively surprised.

For a show targeted at kids, PRO could be surprisingly adult at times.

Though I really didn't care for their take on a version of the Borg.

How many Star Trek fans watched 90210? Genuine question because my fan group never did so the comparison is genuinely lost on me. Was there a lot of kissing in it?

I watched 90210 through the first year or so post-HS I think, then I lost interest and/or I lost track of it.
I'm not sure what constitutes "a lot" of kissing. Given the premise, I think kissing was to be expected, but I don't recall an inordinate amount of it...I do recall wishing that show had had the courage to explore non-heteronormativity to any significant degree.

I rather doubt SFA intends to really go that route, but people kiss sometimes, especially when they're young and in relationships.

My daughter is very much into "The Rookie", and while I probably wouldn't have watched this show without her, I don't find it so bad ... if Starfleet Academy is any like it, insecure rookies but also their trainers, it might become a decent enough show. Despite some focus on "who with who" melodrama.

You don't have to watch something to know stuff about a tv show, just by virtue of said thing being in the public consciousness.

My wife, for example: she has never seen a STAR WARS movie, but she knows who Han Solo, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker are, knows what the Death Star is, etc. Very broad strokes, but it's well known enough that you can't help but know something about STAR WARS just by living.

Or myself: I've never seen a single episode of FRIENDS (actually now that I think about it, I've never seen a single scene) but I know half the characters in the cast end up marrying each other.

By extension, 90210 and similar shows have traits that you expect from that genre (teen shows), so you get an idea of what they're about just because enough people around have seen them.

That's fair. I just missed the 90210 craze beyond occasional comments. I couldn't begin to tell you what it is about it what to expect with a comparison. :shrug
