Jayru (JSnaith's) 3D Trek

More tweaks to the blocking out. I think I can start shaping her into something -

Not a big ship, 198m in length with 10 decks. But... Yes, in my mind's eye, she looked different, as I say - translating a couple of decades-old sketches into 3D can be hit and miss when you start seeing all the angles. Nice to know even back in '84 I was obsessed with the Oberth Class as well.

Ok, enough waffle, more tomorrow.

This is awesome. I like how it totally fits into the era and is still a unique design.
Thank you! It is a design in progress.

Good small ship...
Thank you.

Updates, changed a few things, and therefore had to take a few steps back, but it has allowed me to redo a few things that were causing errors.

More tomorrow, heavy day with other things.

Very nice slots in with my idea of what a frigate/Corvette escort would look like.
I have a broad question, one that really should be on another thread, given that Starfleet is a paramilitary organisation (lose one at that, no saluting etc), whose primary function is exploration, why do we always define ships in terms of military roles? I see this ship as a small capable science vessel.

Now, I really like the Oberth, but am I the only one that thinks THIS is what the Oberth should have been?
Thank you - until I redefined things on the Oberth it always bugged me how they got around the ship. That was the challenge with this, to create a platform that could do the same job, and work. Not a large capital platform like the Constitution or Excelsior, something smaller and niche.

My thoughts on the Challenger Class. I see her as a late 23rd century ship, 2299 - maybe even 2301. She's listed as a system survey ship, a science ship, that has some experimental features - like sensor pallets (something that will become standard in the future). She has teeth, but only because the Oberth lacked them and was so easily picked off. In terms of firepower, she lacks the punch that a larger ship like Miranda or Constitution would have - but can hold her own. Two forward-facing torpedo launchers that double as probe launchers and eight double Phaser Emitters. The ten integrated decks allow for easy access to all parts of the ship, and the proper hangar facilities at the aft of the hull mean the saucer can be fully used for crew facilities, meaning the ship has proper labs and crew support. The ship carries two shuttle craft for supported missions. I don't see the crew capacity being larger than 100 officers and crew. Also, I see the class as being discontinued in favour of something better, so examples would be ultra rare.

More monday.

Basic answer to the question about Starfleet... It IS military.

It's just that what constitutes being military in their time is not what we would consider purely military now. Just as there are aspects of modern military services today that would hardly fit in well about 200-250 years ago.
