Season 4 First Clip

Looks interesting, my only complaint? Is that director who likes to spin the camera around still working on Star Trek? I had to close my eyes every time that started happening on Discovery because it made me nauseous, wouldn't be so bad if they did it slowly. Of course that's just my opinion formed by a lifetime of personal biases and head injuries. People criticised J. J. Abrams for overusing lens flares but I disagree with that particular criticism, I fucken love lens flares. More please.

Thank you @Precious Tritium

A new Vulcan!!! :luvlove:

SNW is getting its own T'Lyn
I hope she's not going to be a red shirt like Gamble

That spinning camera annoyed me as well!

Of all the pairings they could do, they chose the most incompatible ones. They will have a whirlwind romance filled with toxic behaviour before they finally broke up, I'm calling it

Was that about Uhura and Beto and or Spock and La'an? Or both? A part of his quote was in the past tense. I'm really, really hoping that Spock and La'an come to a very timely end and Peck's quote means that Spock thinks about what he learnt from both Chapel and La'an and applies it to his future relationship with Kirk. I'm not sure how it's related (unless Spock and Kirk also get romantic) but that awful relationship needs to end early so that Spock can move along and develop.

I hold out no hope that Uhura and Beto will end soon. Celica said that she insisted on a strong romance plotline for Uhura. I have no idea why. They were not a strong pair. There were some uncomfortable moments when it looked like he set her up to get something from her and she altered his personality without his true consent. The rest was just so, so boring.

Why do the actors and show runners think that romance is the only solution to character development. Earlier Trek's haven't had this problem. They have rich characters to work with a fantastic cast. I thought that they got it with the slow sexual tension between Spock and Chapel in season 1. This is such a different direction. Still if Spock and La'an are in the past, that will help.

Turns out that TOS Spock is only uninterested in romance because he's already fucked his way through half the ship. ;)

It seems that way! It will be hilarious if they really do add Leila Kolomi back in and have Spock fall for and shag her as well before getting back together with T'Pring in season 5.

Do the showrunners really struggle to see that this behaviour isn't Spock? Yes he's younger but we're only a few years off TOS. He needs to be at least like Spock. He was much closer in Season 1.

I mean Uhura and Beta for this exact reason

Very true. You said 'ones' so I thought you meant more than one. I would prefer Kirk and La'an to Spock and La'an. Apparently Carol will be a few episodes so I guess we will revisit Kirk's feelings and probably Kirk and La'an as a result of that.

And then one might wonder why Spock looks at a childhood photo of T'Pring in TOS instead of an adult one. :shifty:

Even if he never sees her again we know from Season 1 and 2 that he would have had plenty of opportunities to take photos of her. Maybe that picture was from the day they got engaged? I thought it was implied in Amok Time that they actually hadn't seen each other since they were children. I appreciate why SNW wanted to retcon this and I think they did very successfully. I really liked T'Pring. She was an ice queen. I now appreciate why Stonn might have looked like the better bet - he's less likely to have slept with half of his colleagues.

Happier time, before the obligations they have during the events of SNW and TOS? Taking out the selhat, having plomeek soup without any care in the world.

Lol. Did they actually know each other beyond the engagement? I can just see T'Pril trying to keep daughter well away from that family!

I also truly had to close my eyes during the camera-spinning in the clip. I wish they would get over that move. It's not good.

Ugh, I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate the idea of keeping Beto going. It honestly hadn't even occurred to me as a possibility, it just seems obviously tapped out. There's nothing in that character or that relationship that seems to warrant further exploration.

However, I am obsessed with the Spock/Chapel/La'an thing, so I am happy for more of that.

I'd greatly prefer to see the relationships removed and other parts of Spock's development highlighted. I'm not sure how the relationships with Chapel and La'an influence his relationship with Kirk. I assume that they won't make it romantic with Kirk? Now that would be controversial.
I have complained incessantly about Kirk on this show. I think he shouldn't be there at all, and also the actor is terrible and the stories they give him are bad ("The Sehlat Who Ate It's Tail" being the sole exception so far).

All that being said, if we get an actual Kirk/Spock hookup on this show, I'll forgive it all and take back every complaint. :bolian::lol::beer:

I can sort of forgive the Spock romance thing, while it seemed like he broke up with Chapel and was devoted to science in Subspace Rhapsody it isn't all that "human" to just be able to make a clean break like that and even in TOS Spock was still shown to not always be able to contain his emotions even without mind control or spores or what have you.

The life threatening circumstances with the Gorn brought his feelings for Chapel back up and La'an is a rebound. Unhealthy and illogical but human. The why of Spock deciding to embrace his Vulcan side so much strongly in TOS and then undergoing (at least attempting to) kolinahr after that 5 year mission is over is a much longer answer than people probably imagined but people are very very complicated.

We can for now at least assume Leila is post-La'an so Spock has realised that human romances just don't work for him so he refused to reciprocate her feelings not wanting to be in another rebound.

Uhura and Beto...unless they think of something much more creative to do with them then that's just going to continue to be boring. A moment between Uhura and Scotty maybe even if he is 13 or 14 years older than her but clearly hasn't hit the scotch quite so hard yet.

No, just Uhura and Beto. Sorry for the confusion!

Looks fun but I dislike that the Enterprise moves like a car instead of big ship. Voyager was a much smaller ship so that it could be more manoeuvrable. CGI has a lot to answer for!

What surprises me the most about that clip is that Paramount kept it going after the ship gets stranded wherever they are. I wouldn't have shown them picking up the pieces and taking the shuttle down in the preview.

If you're trying to hype the show, showing a little too much kills the suspense.
Maybe they felt that people would think they would reappear as Muppets, so they wanted to diffuse that expectation. :rommie:

It was a fun clip - what happens next though it most important. Making a good cold open is easy.
