Someone on this production really wants a Doctor Who crossover.

That was the highlight of the entire episode!

That was ok, but nothing special. We got some nice Kirk/Spock and a little bit of M'Benga, but I don't really care about Korby or the possessing aliens. The Pike/Batel stuff was fine, they had good chemistry but I knew their relationship wouldn't end happily, and the false life section was boring.

Overall an ok but lackluster end to probably the weakest SNW season so far, although still a season with a few great episodes. 6/10

Well, that was an episode. Not sure what to think of it but that whole scene with Pike an Batel living a whole lifetime together had me in tears.

I'm sure the writers were hoping that this emotional content would distract from the plotting problems but it didn't. In the end, it was just an illusion that never happened but it filled air time. Pike doesn't have a daughter out there etc. A nothing-burger.

I loved how casually this episode introduced yet another way for the transporter to easily and always resurrect the dead.

I guess we have a few of those to ignore already, so what's one more?

IDK if I'd call what was done 'easy'. Also, it was done by a member of yet another ancient non-corporeal godlike race so honestly, that's about as 'Trek' as you can get.

I think season 3 has been mostly misunderstood and underappreciated... I think that in about 10 years, people will look back at this season as a gem. I felt it had an awesome balance of drama, humor and out-of-the-box formats. It featured some great new concepts and alien races (The Jikaru, The Vezda), and some awesome additions to canon (Kirk taking command of the Farragut, etc.). I know there's this populistic tendency to hate on this season, even though I realise that some people have grounded, well thought out criticism (which is valid, even though I disagree). But the 'hate for the sake of hate'-crowd has unfortunately dominated the comment sections and social media channels...

I reminds me a lot of VOY and ENT back in the late '90's and the first half of the 2000's. Those shows were hated immensely back than, just as Berman and Braga were hated... Nowadays, those shows are considered 'classic, REAL Trek'... So people will come around... Someday SNW S3 will get the credit it well deserves...

Spock logically deduced that M'Benga murdered Dak'rah but said nothing out of loyalty to Captain Pike, who Spock had correctly deduced already knew about the murder and looked the other way.

Kirk obtains this information through his mind meld with Spock but has no proof against M'Benga as a mind meld is insufficient to court martial a Starfleet doctor.

When Kirk takes command of the Enterprise, M'Benga is demoted from CMO.

April: Wow, you didn't even spend 2 seconds trying to think of a name, you already had one prepared. Uh, you didn't have any time traveling adventures I should tell Temporal Investigations about?

Pike: Well, I mean it's classified. I mean, yes I did have time traveling adventures but it wasn't on a time traveling adventure I learned your son's name, more like an illusion. You know what, never mind.

One little detail I really liked, was how the camera lingered on Chapel when Pike mused about the one we just never see again, implying Korby's departure this time is in fact the last we see of him with Chapel of course being oblivious yet to that fact.

As late as 1996 or 1997 Trek had the Eugenics Wars being around the year 2173. I know, the writer of that DS9 episode later admitted they made a mistake in dating the conflicts, but still. It got onscreen. So...canon. Even if wrong.

Actually, you could claim since TNG's Pilot episode Encounter At Farpoint (1987) and/or TNG S1 The Neutral Zone (1988).

Another poster was right about Pelia; she did nothing really. In fact, aside from a couple chuckles I still find the character useless, and Carol Kane's voice like nails on a chalkboard.

I actually really liked the concept and execution of her character when she started. However, they've failed to use her in any interesting and meaningful way. One of the biggest "misses" of the series so far along with failing to develop Jim & Sam's relationship.

Maybe in the next 16 episodes?

Well, the second one referenced only said that cryogenic suspension capsules aboard crude spacecraft existed in 1994, nothing about the Eugenics Wars.

Agreed. It hits the usual "This is bad because it's not great" tone of arguments that I have seen repeated often throughout the fandom.

Well, were they launching cryo-corpses into space immediately post the Eugenics Wars? I don't think so. Plus the 20th century businessman was certain he still had a 'stock portfolio'. My point? The way the 1990s post Eugenics Wars was described by Spock would indicate to ne the world didn't just 'snap back to normal pre war life' and I doubt you'd have a company advertising or launching cryoc-apsules into orbit during or after the EW - so ergo the EW didn't happen in that timeframe.

Doubt it, since when we see her, Kirk is in the shot saying dialogue specific to this episode.

Also possible they filmed his bridge scenes the same time they filmed Sahlet's tail so they wouldn't have to redress the bridge for such a short scene.

Wesley isn’t trying to imitate Shatner. He’s doing his own interpretation of the character

It's the unnatural cadence he's doing. That's what I find so imitative, trying to find any version of Shatner's unusual speech patterns. It's doomed to fail and also misses the point, because it's so surface level. Shatner's weird cadence worked because it was unique to him. Wesley's performance is shackled because he's trying to evoke this quality that shouldn't even be there.

But, I also think he's a bad actor generally and has been handed an impossible task playing a character that never should have been on the show, so it's failures all the way down on this one.

Boy, that was a really bizarre episode, and I don't mean that in a positive way. I think my condensed thought was simply "this feels like fantasy writers were forced to write science fiction

Yes! That puts it so perfectly. This episode was just so loaded with mysticism in a way that I don't think served it.

I don't think that's so true here? I mean, obviously we get the full spectrum, but I've found opinions on this season fairly measured.

I've realized every season has the exact same number of full-out-failures, for me.

In season 1, "Elysian Kingdom" and "A Quality Of Mercy" were the flops.

Season 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera" and "Tomorrow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow" got things off to a highly unpromising start, before the season rebounded.

Season 3, "What Is Starfleet?" and I think this one.

Continuity errors have always been compounding and stacking in Star Trek since the 1960s. We've gotten by without needing to cry "Alternate Timeline" for the first forty years.

Ever since the JJ-verse allowed the "Alternate Timeline" to be canon, why are you so against it?

Heck even Lower Decks admits to the existence of Parallel Timelines / Worlds.

I've realized every season has the exact same number of full-out-failures, for me.

In season 1, "Elysian Kingdom" and "A Quality Of Mercy" were the flops.

Season 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera" and "Tomorrow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow" got things off to a highly unpromising start, before the season rebounded.

Season 3, "What Is Starfleet?" and I think this one.

I think the biggest thing is the Vezda are told to be horrifyingly evil every single scene but we never actually see them doing...horrifying evil.

Yeah, they kill a few guys.

I mean it's TERRIBLE when I say, "Star Trek Online did this so much better."

(I don't dislike Star Trek Online but it's funny that they did the Iconian thing so much better)
