corman wasn't in the business of making *bad* movies, whether directing or producing. he was in the business of making a bunch of movies on a budget, so any one failure wouldn't tank the studio, and with a lot of variety.

Corman also directed the Edgar Allen Poe movies for AIP.

Since he didn't die until 1978 who knows. He was alive to take part and having a genuine Hollywood smash might have helped him with his depression and avert an early death.

the Ring Drive from the XCV ships never went away entirely. It just got incorporated horizontally as a secondary method, which is why the script sometimes seems to indicate ships still managing FTL or close to it without a Cochrane drive. Where did the ring go? (points to the saucer)

Possible explanation: rings work for most space warping uses. Geoffrey Mandel's is based upon TAS...
They may have attempted to find a better solution, and did, but it was 'more' limited, and they went back to rings... TNG.
But in order to even try a change, it had to be at the very least, have better than a ten percent improvement. Otherwise, why bother?

Side note:
I just love how in Star Trek 2009 there is a scene where Spock enters the turbolift in the shuttle bay, and then, in one continuous shot, seconds later he arrives on the bridge - very purposefully implying there's some futuristic magic going on with the turbolifts (JJ Abrams even says so in the audio commentary)
Only for then in the very next movie, Into Darkness, people then having long, drawn out conversations on the turbolift that take exactly as long as the ride.

I think that you are correct...
Corman thought THE INTRUDER was arguably his finest....and naturally it made far less money. Retitling it I HATE YOUR GUTS didn't make much of a dent afterward.
