Just rewatched Man of Steel to see if it still holds up. It does to me. Don’t worry. I’m not planning to do a blow by blow comparison or argue it’s better than Superman.

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed each film.
  2. I’m not at all attempting to persuade anyone who doesn’t like Man of Steel to change their mind.
  3. I think box office number arguments are pointless as the industry and society’s consumption, for lack of a better term, of movies has changed significantly enough between each film to render such comparisons obsolete (like comparing different sports eras).
In short, I like each film because they are successful at telling the story the directors wanted to tell. Also, I find each of the stories and approaches interesting in and of themselves. So while I’m fully aware some heavily favour one over the other, I don’t. If forced to choose, I slightly prefer Man of Steel because I find its premise a bit more compelling—but I’m talking a 51/49 split here. And I look forward to the next instalment by Gunn with great anticipation.

I’ll always wish Cavill had gotten at least one more kick at the can (solo movie) but I also hope Corenswet (sp?) gets a long run as well.

See? It is possible to like more than one of these two versions after all. 😉
For me the ideal scenario would be for Cavill to come back in an Injustice storyline. All those flashforward dream sequences we saw in BVS and his Snyder Cut for Justice League seemed to point in that direction: Metropolis destroyed, Superman becoming a tyrant etc. IMO it would be perfect because its obviously where Snyder would have wanted to take the character anyways plus the ending of Injustice shows it to be an alternate universe with the real Superman and Lois showing up. Doubt it would ever happen, but I think it would be a cool movie.

The lack of knowing when it would come to streaming helped, along with Barbieheimer and the extra marketing push it got from external sources.

Repeating this fantasy does not make it true. You have no evidence regarding the lack of awareness of streaming releases had anything to do with Barbie & Oppenheimer's phenomenal success. The films were released in the streaming / post-Covid 2023--a period where there was no guesswork about the average release of films on streaming platforms, yet long before any estimated period, the two films struck historic gold as theatrical releases, while your non-so-precious MCU films were and continue to struggle at the box office.

You can attempt to erect as many excuses around your only concern in this matter--the MCU--until the end of time, but the movie going public spoke with mass interest and dollars to support films they wanted to see right out of the theatrical gates. Barbie & Oppenheimer captured the movie-going experience for worldwide audiences--they felt the films were worthy of said experience. That's not happening with the MCU of late, and its the fault of Marvel Studios, not nonexistent external factors.

They were also released without anyone knowing WHEN they'd be on streaming, when with most every other "Big Name" movie it's usually advertised that it'll only be on streaming in a month. So folks who usually would wait till streaming didn't know how long they'd have to wait and thus decided to see them in the theatre.

You ignoring the external factors is selective obliviousness.

Watched it again tonight. Fourth time. And the theater still had an English language screening, so I went for that. Still an absolute joy. At this point I think I'm past the recency bias and can actually say that this now is one of my four favorite movies of all time, and absolutely my favorite superhero movie.

I didn't go see them in theaters because I knew they were going to be on streaming in a few months. I had no idea there was any question about them going to streaming since pretty much every major studio movie goes to their streaming services eventually.
