Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

I know she did the bridge officer test but if her primary interest remained being a ship's counsellor there was probably no reason for her rank to advance.

She TOOK the test BECAUSE she wanted to be more than just a Ship's Counsellor - she was envious of Beverly getting to Captain the 1701-D during night shifts and a Borg incident.

I always thought it was because she was out of her depth while on the Bridge while being the ranking Officer in Disaster.

I thought this was supposed to be a show about hot young space adults having hot space sex and not about potential posthumous promotions for one of a thousand crewmembers of one of a thousand starships from almost a thousand years ago before all the hot space sex which we were promised is supposed to take place.

Someone hasn’t been paying attention to CBS Trek. It is always about the name drop above all else.

:guffaw:- Troi never made it past Commander rank. Yep that tracks.
;)

Though she was a Lt. Commander for most of TNG's run getting her promotion after taking the bridge officer's test.

Think La Forge had the most promotions from Lt. J.G to Commodore.

Are you seriously surprised which one we're taking more notice of?

If she wants command because she is envious of someone else then she was not fit for command.

She might of passed but it showed she wanted it for the wrong reasons so her advancement was slow.

Big part of the reason but she was never gunning for a command chair, that's simply not in her interests. She wanted to challenge herself again and gain new experience, she did and i assume taking over command responsibilities from time to time to keep up with current developments is a nice change of pace occasionally, much like Dr. Crusher did ( and sometimes it IS nice to be head honcho and sit in the big chair ;) )

The odd thing is that Crusher and Troi wanting to play captain, that it takes command hours away from other officers that actually are on the command track.

On the whole, it wasn’t well thought out.

I don't think they were regulars for those off hour shifts and besides there are not that many Lt.Cdr's or Commanders on the Enterprise to fully staff a 3 shift rotation and get them the experience. If i recall correctly the Enterprise-D had about 1000 regular crew, roughly 300 per shift ( or maybe a bit split unevenly with a majority during peak "office hours" and a reduced crew for 2nd and Night Shift).

And for sure i don't think a Lieutenant should be in command of the ship on the regular so having some Commanders available with the necessary clearance and knowledge to take over occasionally is much appreciated by any captain, especially during Holiday Season ( do they still have that in the 24th century?).

Man i love to nitpick fictional details in fictional TV shows about superfictional stuff that no one besides the people here care about

Whether Lieutenant or not, folks in the chain of command should get all the bridge hours they can get, because you never know when a LT will have to take the center seat. Like Worf in “…Farpoint” and LaForge in “Arsenal of Freedom”.

TNG painted itself into this corner by not replacing Yar with another female character that was in the chain of command.
