News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

I thought SFA was greenlit before DISCO was cancelled.
Assuming this thread was started at the same time the show was greenlit, then there was actually a span of nearly a month between Disco's cancellation and the greenlight for this show, as Disco was cancelled very early March 2023 and this thread was started March 30 2023.

Granted, we knew there was an Academy series in development before then, and everyone assumed it would be 32nd century based on the stuff about Tilly and the Cadets in Disco S4 believed to be a sort of backdoor pilot for such series, but I don't think anything was official until after Disco's cancellation was announced.

I expect the difference between Starfleet Academy and Discovery, will be similar to the differences between Strange New Worlds and Discovery.

SNW took their initial inspiration from what was done in Discovery, and went their own direction with it, combining modern art direction and storytelling with a retro feel.

I'd expect SFA to go with a similar approach.

Despite attending top universities and working with 2 Nobel laureates during that time, I hated school and don't generally like works depicting a school environment. X-Men is an exception but that franchise very rarely focuses on the school aspect (and hasn't in some time, in the comics they just fled Krakoa and are doing whatever). So I'm ambivalent about Academy for similar reasons.

I did school for far too long but am thrilled for an Academy series. Why? It's the 11 year old in me I guess. Space Academy stories were my absolute favorite growing up.

Admiral Vance: All right class, here's your next simulation. Holographic Su'kal is about to have a tantrum next to a dilithium quarry. You have seconds to act, and you have no non-lethal weapons and no transporters on call. If you kill him, you will have committed murder and will be court martialed. If you don't kill him, he's about to start a new Burn killing trillions. Also universal translators are scrambled and Su'kal has no idea what you're saying, even if you're a native Kelpien speaker, and it would take hours to unscramble the translators. What should you do?

Doctor: The last time someone forced a no-win situation on cadets they accidentally reprogrammed me too in the process of reprogramming the simulation.

Admiral Vance: Shut up

I, like most others, will watch it, if only because it’s going to be the only Star Trek on TV for at least six months out of the year 2026. If it’s stupid and sucks, I won’t renew my P+ subscription, because 10 episodes a year of SNW isn’t worth keeping it.

Is transwarp beaming dependent on dilithium too? It seemingly wasn't even mentioned in Discovery. Come to think of it, it doesn't seem to come up in Picard much either...

I want more beauty shots and action shots of the 32nd century ships. Especially the Eisenberg and Angelou classes.

Technically, those ships are over a century old. Now that they don’t have to worry about the Burn, Starfleet should be constructing new ships to replace that aging fleet. Expect to see a new Enterprise-Q in this show.
