The F**k word in Star Trek

Come on. You deliberately use odd spellings like "StarFleet". So it's hard to take you seriously on this
Okay, I like "StarFleet" written this way.

"Starfleet" written the original way is kind of bland.

Also, in my 26th Century Head Canon.

We'll see the initial ships for "TimeFleet" & "RealityFleet".

"TimeFleet" deals with Time-Travel as the primary realm to explore.

"RealityFleet" is all about crossing over to other Realities such as ("Quantum Realities", "Parallel Universes", "Other Dimensions").

We even get "AquaFleet" for those who serve Planet-side with traditional Maritime vessels.

So UFP's Service Branches have grown into many service branches, even the Space Navies have Branched off into their own specialized services.

All irrelevant to my point.

From everything I see and hear in daily life, I don't hear excessive swearing amongst the general populace that I interact with.

Obviously there are shows & some people who are like that, but it isn't the norm to hear people swear like crazy.
Again, you're making a generalization on a very small sample size.

And since this thread is repeating itself from initial posts made a month ago, I'm going to share this point once more:

I'm in LA, working in the engineering, design, and construction industries - plenty of professionals in all of these industries - regardless of age or if they're in the field or in the office - swear. Not for a second would I allege any of these licensed people are anything less than professional. The clients we work with swear, and I have worked with all kinds in my near decade in the industry.

I feel compelled to bring up one of my favorite bits from Stephen Fry on the joys of swearing:

And I'm also in LA too, but we obviously run in different circles.
So you can only deal with the sample size that you encounter with on a daily basis.

I deal with the one I'll encounter. You deal with yours.
It's okay if we have different experiences.

I feel a certain way, it's fine that it's different from how you feel.
You can feel a different way about the same subject matter.
It's all good. That's the beauty of modern life.

We can agree to disagree on a topic and be content with that.
It doesn't change anything other than our preferences.

Your head canon is also irrelevant to how it's spelled. The franchise spells it "Starfleet".
For now…

But if you ever see that change, you know who came up with the idea first.
Not any of us here.

Thank you for sharing again. The "elitist language" reminds me of how we got some of our current profanities is because the elite class spoke French, and Old English words became vulgar to distinguish classes from each other.

Or, as it sometimes sounds, "Don't talk back to your betters."

As far back as 1986 Kirk said "dipshit" in a film. Profanities in Trek are hardly new, it's just DSC's breaking a previous taboo with the F-bomb that provoked so much anger amongst some fans. "Shit," dipshit," "son of a bitch" and the F-bomb are all just variations on the same theme, but "f**k" gets more arrows fired at it because of the sexual connotation and its association with intimacy and human sexuality.

Yeah, there are some fans who are just prudish about strong language in-general, but the F-bomb gets more flak fired in its general direction because of its long history as a sexual reference. It sounds harsher, but Data's "OH, SHIT" in Generations wasn't any less distracting. It was just blurted by a more beloved character who at that point had been a fan favorite for seven years. Tilly and Stamets? Less so, even if you as a fan liked or loved both characters.

One thing worth considering is that all throughout its history, Star Trek has more or less been family oriented. You could easily sit down with family members and watch it together. I can't say I feel comfortable watching the F-Bomb scenes with family members. I'm no prude either. It's all about expectation as part of Star Trek's long history of being accessible to a wide variety of ages. Not just young, but older as well., as my experience is that the older someone is, the more they are going to be bothered by unnecessary language.

If it were dropped in every episode I might agree about the verbal tone of the series, but as rarely as the F-bomb was used in streaming Trek I just view it as one of those things to cringe at and just ignore or just plain overlook as a human being being a human being, no matter the century. The technobabble can annoy me more than using modern slang or obscenities, since the technobabble is usually at the heart of resolving an episode or story arc plot.
