James Bond either gets the "Reacher" / "The Terminal List" / "Jack Ryan" or "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" / "The Wheel of Time" treatment.


Reimagined James Bond movies for the "modern audience":

• Dr No Means No
• On They/Them Majesty's Secret Service
• The Man with the Golden Gun control
• You Only Vote Twice
• Moonracism
• The Guy Who Loved Me
• Live and Let DEI
• Tomorrow Never DEIs
• DEI Another Day
• No Time to DEI

And then there is the possibility that it's going to be a giant borefest ("Citadel").

It is still possible to have a Bond who respects women's boundaries, understands the concept of consent, is actually a (I do declare) feminist but still gets a lot of action?

I mean, if they wanted to be true to Fleming, that would be about the most Flemingish thing Bond could do.

GoldenEye was "woke" 25 years before "woke" was even an issue. Judi Dench's M was a huge change in direction for the franchise, even moreso than hiring Brosnan to replace Dalton.

It was honestly a great way to address all the concerns of Bond being outdated in the 90s by actually saying “yes Bond isn’t a PC character and we like him that way”.

It was also sort of a way of returning to the novels in a sense, because Fleming Bond was written to sort of be a man out of time, a gentleman spy that represented pre-WWII era finding himself in the changing modern world. Spinning that by having Brosnan Bond referred to as a “relic of the Cold War” was a nice modernization of Fleming’s Bond, even though Brosnan is very much leaning onto the cinematic takes of Connery and Moore, with a smidge of Dalton brooding.

I've seen Brosnan as a combination of Moore's cheekiness and playfulness and Dalton's dark-haired, young looks for a very long time now.

For a time my only real issue with Brosnan was that he didn't bring anything new to the table, and yes he is a mix of Moore and Dalton but there is more to him than that, it's the schoolboy glee. I think he's the one Bond who clearly loves being Bond.

The expressions on Brosnan's face during the "backseat driver" scene in Tomorrow Never Dies are 100% what you're describing. This is a man who is facing danger at every turn and it's awesome.

I always viewed this is not being so much PC as reflecting the more chaste post-AIDS era of the 1980s

^This; as a sign of the times, Dalton's Bond typically only hooked up with two women per movie vs. Moore's three. By Brosnan's time, they were back up to three again (at least for his first three films; I've tried to forget Die Another Day.)
