Might be time to appraise season 2 again. All the MAGA trekkies came out of the woodwork but it feels more relevant now, both the fascist future and ICE were prescient.
Having a politically agreeable message does not make a good story in itself. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace features a villain literally named "Nute Gunray" ("Nute" as in Gingrich and "Gunray" is just Reagan backwards) but I wouldn't call it a good movie.

It's in an imperfect season, but making Trek relevant is part of the fun. When talking about those issues I was using past tense, but little did we know it was just a prelude.

Many trekkies were dismissive of the season just for those reasons: "oh the Ice stuff isn't real or they're anti-American, straw target", but no folks it was a warning.

As I've said before, Trek is doing it's job if it makes people angry.

I went 1/3/2.

S1 at least attempted to try to be new and gave us some memorable characters in the form of Laris and Rios. Although the Romulan kid seemed to have no real place and many of the plot points were completely out of whack, I think I enjoyed this more than S3, which in hindsight was little more than a gigantic dose of fan service sprinkled with some character assassination.

I just finished rewatching season 1 and 2, and I found that the second season evened out a bit for me the second time through. The episodes at the start weren't so great anymore when I knew that the mystery of what the Borg were up to and what Q was telling Picard was all basically nonsense. But on the other hand I was able to relax about butterflies and appreciate the Rios romance plot. Also I wasn't waiting for it to time travel somewhere new and show me something I hadn't seen in the trailer already this time around, so that helped.

Then is Covid really a legitimate excuse for season two?
I'd say so. They had to scrap their original story and you can see the signs of it all over the season. The smaller cast, the pairing off of characters, when the characters are all together they are social distancing while trying very hard not to look like they are social distancing.

Those are reasons for why they had to do things a certain way, not reasons for why the season was so poorly written/plotted.

No. Bad writing is bad writing, which was the fundamental problem of PICARD season 2.

FOUNDATION and FOR ALL MANKIND, for example, both were delayed by covid and filmed during that time. Both are excellent shows.
To each their own. I found Picard season 2 okay but Foundation season 1 increasingly unwatchable despite a solid premiere episode.

3----------1-----------------------------------------------------------2

PIC S2 may actually be the worst season of Star Trek ever. But I really liked S1 and S3.

I would say Season 2 it was more comparable in "badness" to DSCO's and LD's opening seasons, but it was much more transitional and formulaic than experimental and tonally off like those shows.
