...As well as everyone else who sees that curious little all-or-mostly-black badge on their curious all-black uniforms that nobody else wears, flying around in their curious all-black starships that are kind of Starfleet looking but not, that nobody else flies around in. Curiously...

For a covert organization that should be silently whispering "Fuck off", they sure are loudly screaming, "Look at me!!!" pretty consistently.

Almost as bad as that period in DC Comics where Superman had gone incognito and was pretending to be dead so as to keep his family safe, but couldn’t help needing to go out and help people. So he started flying around secretly, wearing a black outfit… with a huge letter S on his chest.

I have a hypothetical question: how long does it have to stay in the Paramount+ Top 10 before it isn't a flop?
I am reminded of the response to the first Venom movie. The critical reception was horrible and everyone expected it to flop and fade away into obscurity. Instead, it made a boatload of money and spawned a trilogy. It would be neat if something similar happened here, despite the critical response. Not necessarily a trilogy of 31 movies, but the straight to streaming movie concept in general, which I would like to see continue.

this. While i don't think it's especially likely we'll see the S31 characters again, I definitely want the 'Long Trek' TV movies to continue

Slop nothing movies end up in the top 10 on Netflix all the time, and are never heard of again.

That is to say, it can both be a "hit" on the platform, and be a huge failure for Paramount+.
It's also a cost-to-benefit ratio as well. Paramount+'s Halo series had about twice the amount of billions of minutes viewed as Discovery (season 5), but Paramount cancelled it because it was too expensive for what they were getting in viewers.

Trek is at the "just about right" part of the porridge table.

This. It's coming out now that a LOT more people watched the infamous Star Wars: Acolyte than the haters would have you believe: https://gizmodo.com/star-wars-the-a...t-watched-show-on-disney-last-year-2000555281 . Disney still stands by its cancellation though due to how expensive the Acolyte was to make. In this era, the number of views is no guarantee. A lot of people could be watching Section 31 but if those views don't make up for how much it costs, then it's meaningless.

The other thing that's important is the trend.

The Acolyte started strong and then bled viewers badly for the later episodes. That's not good if you're looking for an audience that will be there for a second season, and factoring in the cost of doing a second season.

It's like a student applying to med school with a bad GPA. If you start with Ds in your freshman year, and finish strong, you can make an argument that your GPA doesn't reflect your strengths. But if you start out with As and finish failing classes, it's not a good look for getting accepted.
