Things that you would like to see in Star Trek.

The thing about the “moral refutation” version is that the way that would inevitably go is—

PICARD: At last we have ended Section 31 and saved the Federation’s soul. I’m so proud of you all.

SHADOWY FIGURE IN DARK ROOM SOMEWHERE WITH BIG “SECTION 31” SYMBOL ON THE WALL: Aww, isn’t that adorable he thinks so?

I agree. I much prefer the other version with the spy war.

Yes but it's like a reverse Star Wars since the Federation are considered "good guys" for the majority of Trek but still would be fun to see a series or mini series about the Maquis
Oh, I get the idea, but it's still something that I question how you twist it so that Federation is still the good guys while having the principle viewpoint be the Maquis.

I think the Maquis were rebelling against Federation influence on planets they had people on, that kind of thing. Not sure how you'd write that but I think that is how such a story might work.

I think it'd be possible. The authoritarian regime they were rebelling against were the Cardassians, their issue with the Federation was that they weren't fighting a war to protect their land. I'm sure a lot of the Starfleet officers in the Maquis would still stand up for the Federation in conversation, and consider getting them on their side to be a goal. And ultimately the Maquis get annihilated, leaving the Federation to finish the fight they helped start.

Then why were the Feds putting Maquis in jail?
They hijacked the Defiant, stole some replicators, attacked the Malinche, used bioweapons, things like that. They weren't going after the Federation as an opponent, they just wanted to swipe their stuff and for them to quit interfering in their attempts to attack Cardassians.

Well that's fair enough but why steal when they could have asked for stuff?

We literally have this story in multiple iterations. It ends up with Starfleet officers leaving Starfleet to support the Maquis.

I'd like to see time-travel stories that show us past eras of planets other than Earth. Show us Medieval Klingons. Show us a Vulcan before Surak.

I also want a non-human captain as a series lead. "Prodigy" is the only "Trek" show with a nonhuman lead so far. Give us more.

The other 97 or 98 Changelings sent out into the galaxy.

The other ships taken by the Caretaker.

More non-humanoid aliens serving in Starfleet.

A series idea: The Galaxy-class was originally intended as a long-range explorer that would spend decades away from Federation space before returning. While most of the Galaxies weren’t ultimately used that way, maybe at least one was? So do a series about a now-old Galaxy finally returning to Federation space after decades Out There, and the protagonists having to adjust to a society that’s closely similar to what they remember, but definitely not the same — say, a TNG Season 1-type crew that’s all about how peaceful and not-really-military the Federation as they see it is, returning after been Out There even longer than usual and getting slapped in the face by the realities of the now darker, more militaristic Federation of PIC…and finding that while it’s familiar, they feel a bit alien to it.

Definitely. I used to have a whole DS9 sequel-series idea for this — “Search for the Hundred” — where Starfleet realized that the plague Section 31 released had a good chance (via Laas or whatever) or reaching the other Changeling orphans who were out there somewhere, so a Starfleet ship with a Founder observer aboard was assigned to go try to seek them out one by one and, if successful, administer the cure/preventative.

I'd like to see something revolving around those guys who are like 'Yeah, I think I'll run a coffee shop in San Fran for the hell of it' and how his lark turns into a passion with the intersection of culture and the various other aspects of being on Earth during the whole 24th century. Or maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to have a character go: "You need to have a straight face when making that Vulcan mocha."

That sounds like a great show that I would absolutely watch, but somehow I can’t see the franchise doing a personal, essentially “mainstream-fiction”-type story with no starships or space-adventure stuff.

Well of course, there's the entire issue of 'what is Star Trek' and all that which even on this site gets 100+ debating posts. I'd enjoy it if it was a smaller scale thing if I'll be honest, like Short Treks or something close. At this point a small budget could be a good thing.

100% agree. If they weren’t dependent on huge ratings, they could afford to do low-budget but high concept productions, including maybe some Actual SF. But alas.
