DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

I liked what Gunn said about not worrying about whether every film by evey director reflects the same world visually - that another movie's Metropolis might not match up with the one in Superman, for example. The focus on the minutiae of continuity, visual and otherwise, is a blight on modern fantasy media.

Watching the last episodes of Superman and Lois, I was struck that the continual revisions and liberties with continuity that have been taken over the very, very long and improvised comic book history of DC comics have given license to writers and directors to significantly diverge and recreate the character in each project.

It does Superman no harm that one version of his story ends with a peaceful death in the town where he grew up, while another may treat him as functionally immortal.

Canon is a self-inflicted wound on fandom.

I loved the minutiae—until I reached Grade 10 English class. I had a wonderful teacher who taught me (and at least some of my classmates, I presume) that character development and eliciting emotional engagement with the story was a more powerful experience than simply connecting continuity points (as has been my predilection to that point). Movies and novels became a lot more interesting after that.

"We're not doing any larger universe-building, that's why I included this immense cast of supporting superhero characters."

?????

Exactly. No modern era superhero movie has ever introduced either a number of other superhero characters and/or any of significance to the universe without the intention of spring-boarding to other projects--IOW, building a film universe.

Both things can be true simultaneously. The characters are in the movie but the story is not meant as a cog within a larger story that doesn’t stand on its own. It’s the difference between a character guesting in a story that is self contained and a story that must be followed in another movie where Superman, in this case, would be a secondary character.

The way I see it, Gunn is basically NOT going to commit to too much in public, since it is all pending the results of Superman. Zaslav doesn't want to repeat the humiliation of the DCFU when they had a list of movies coming out (such as Cyborg and Flash by 2020), many of which didn't materialize, and resulting in lots of financial loss.

If it turns out to be successful, they probably have something ready to go right away, and then they will then announce a prject involving whichever character turns out to be the breakout character. (If I had been DC / WB back in those days, i would started with the JUstice League, and then announced the Superman movie right after that first weekend. Then i would have time to figure out who would be great to have next).

Now, we don't have a thread on Creature COmmandos, right? Just saw episode 3....and maaaaan. I know it's animation, but just this over the top violence, which doesn't feel like it has a point as it did in Robocop. I am glad that this wasn't hyped as being the beginning of the DCOU....but totally feels like Gunn's pet project that he got away with. Now, if Superman & Peacemaker are successful, he might get another season of this.... but somehow, i feel like this is a ratings, if not failure, definite NOT a Peacemaker level show. Won't spoil it too much...but feels like they elaborate don acharacter only to destroy them right away . Oh, but nice to hear Michael Rooker in there (as a different character than TSS)

Episode 3 of CC was fucking brilliant.

I wasn't sure i was interested in the show when I sat down to watch the episode. Now I'm sorry it's a limited series.

Well, whatever happens with Superman, we will presumably at least be guaranteed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, since it will have finished principal photography by the time Superman comes out. (Unless Zaslav makes it another tax write-off, I guess.)

It has really grown on me over three episodes.

I'm not sure what he means by this comment either. But earlier he said there was no "world building" for its own sake--so I'm going to guess that what we are going to get is a Superman story set in an already established world and we are going to see other Supers who are involved directly with the story somehow. So, yes world building is happening but it will be organic to the story.

Now there's supposed to be a 30 second preview of the trailer at 9:00 AM EST this morning.

Remember to take things Gunn says with a huge spoonful of salt. He did say The Flash was one of the best superhero movies ever made, and we saw how that turned out.

Superman 2025 is juggling a lot of things.

Superman, Lois, Jimmy, Lex and Krypto.

The Daily Planet Cast.

Members from the Authority. Before their movie.

Ultraman and possibly Tyrant Sun or some other ‘kaiju’ as the villains.

Some kind of reference to Peacemaker season 2. That could include Peacemaker and Waller, who were not recast.

Maybe an appearance by Milly Alcock’s Supergirl.

And last but not least, Guy Gardner, Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl and Metamorpho. Several Justice Leaguers will be in this film as well.

At this rate, why not add the new Batman and Wonder Woman to the film?

Remember when Superman Legacy was announced, Gunn said it would be about Clark, Lois and Jimmy being ‘cub reporters’ in the early days of their careers.

We are a long way from that. Now, the film is setting up a whole universe.

This is decent of him. Sadly, he pretty much has to do something like this to keep the campaign alive where any studio interest is concerned, because - brace yourselves - some of his fans are behaving like assholes.

Maybe he saw an earlier edit. I thought a lot about it was excellent, but it was badly marred by some elements that were probably the result of executive meddling.
