Spoilers The Roddenberry Archive brings every iteration of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise bridge to life

It’s not enough to love the Trek that you love, you also have to weaponize it against the Trek that you hate. They can’t just take the W, they’re too spiteful to let an opportunity to shit on Trek they hate pass.

And the irony is that the short goes out of its way to include direct references to the Trek they claim to hate. I wonder how many of them understand what Yor was all about.

But I’ve seen such comments on that one video that showcases the virtual displays of ship sets from ALL Trek where you get to tour every universe. “I liked this video until it showed the bridge of Disco ten minutes in. Everything after ENT except PIC S3 should be struck from canon”.

I can’t imagine feeling that miserable as a fan.
All that hate must be fatiguing.

The SNW Enterprise looks awesome just the way it is, IMHO.

:techman:
Agreed. I actually got shivers down my spine when we first saw the bridge on Discovery. It wasn't a slavish recreation, and I absolutely wouldn't want it to be, but it had the feel of the TOS bridge. It had the the proper design and the lines, it just was updated for a modern audience. Spock's station with the little View-Master thingy, and the communications station with the arch-like setup of buttons and controls. I was in near tears taking in the detail.

And why would they want to slavishly recreate the original series bridge anyway? Even Gene Roddenberry himself went for a more modern aesthetic in Star Trek The Motion Picture.

I think SNW was a decent modern update to TOS. TOS is my favorite aesthetic but it feels 50s and 60s vision of a future. SNW could probably tone some things down but overall is good.

The ship looks like a Constitution and is sufficient.

I agree. Though I think they’d still have to update the interiors in terms of tech. Nothing about the bridge in TOS feels futuristic anymore.

I think the update to the interiors is fine, if the bridge is a bit too large. But the exterior makes it look like a completely different ship, not to mention that I think it just looks boring and dull overall. YMMV.

I love TOS, but the SNW sets are objectively a stunning and tasteful reimagining of the sixties aesthetic.

They're almost *too* on-the-nose with the mid-century furniture in Pike's quarters, but it works beautifully.

The exterior, I could take or leave. The redesign is ok, but it manages to not quite capture the clean elegance of either the TOS or TMP versions.

I suspect they were somewhat stuck with what had been inherited from the slightly rushed design process for Disco's final season. But it's fine.

That's 100% exactly what I think. By the time of SNW, the Enterprise interior sets were basically the TOS/TAS sets on steroids (not a bad thing), but other than trying to make the exterior design more like the TOS ship (which they chose not to do, instead just adding large front windows to the saucer that made the ship look even less like the TOS version), they left the Eavesprise design alone. Should they have made more significant changes to the exterior to make it look more like it did in TOS? In my opinion, yes. But that's not what they did. They chose to stick with the Eavesprise. I get that some people love it. That's fine; I'm not trying to change anybody's mind. I just feel that they could have done so much more. This 'visual reboot' thing they're doing offered the opportunity for that, and they could have at least tweaked it to have more of the feel of TOS, but they decided not to. Again, YMMV.

Does the exterior matter that much? I'm not looking for grace or elegance. If they had decided to go closer to TOS then would the story have changed much? In my opinion, no.

It's purely a decision to sell this thing to an audience not obsessed like fans are. And it works for the most part, barring some choices.

I doubt they are miserable, since one can assume that their average Trek viewing experience does not include the parts of the franchise they do not like. Its usually when their favorites are seen alongside the "bad" references when you hear the complaints.

If you have to ask you'll never know.
So glad that people are willing to not explain themselves or their opinions. This isn't some high brow theoretical physics question; it's a question of importance and why is it important? Do people truly never question their assumptions about fiction? It's just accepted as is? :vulcan:

I get tired of this.

Oh come on, you know that a lot of Star Trek fans enjoy the tech, and the ships are as influential a part of the franchise as the characters. This has always been the case with Star Trek.

The Roddenberry Archive is a literally an example of this. It's a gallery of Starships, bridges, sets and props, not characters.

I don't think SNW would be a better show if they'd used the TOS Enterprise instead of their own, but personally I prefer the look of the original ship. Either way I'm not the producer making these decisions.

That wasn't my question.

This answers my question. Thank you.

Irrelevant.

That's right. In the big scheme of things, the design of the ship doesn't matter. But that doesn't stop the people like us who care about such things to have an opinion about it, or the people making these designs to care about their work or want their fans to enjoy it as much as they enjoyed designing it. That will never stop, no matter who claims to not understand it.
