I 'liked’ your post in spite of this and I will forgive you this lapse in judgment just this once. Herbert!"The Way to Eden" is canon, but it's a turd of an episode.

I won't be arrogant enough to assume this is true of you personally, but if this film was made by Paramount+ many of the fans making similar comments would be screaming about how it doesn't have a coherent story, nothing is explained properly, the time gap for Saavik and Yor makes no sense, Gary Mitchell's alive for no reason, Wesley's recast and unrecognizable, there was no clear connection between the teaser montage and the rest, some of the scenes from the teaser were missing in the final product, the special effects weren't good enough, none of the works that they were adapting (Early Voyages, Vulcan's Heart, etc.) were adapted faithfully, the whole thing is nothing but "memberberries" appealing to nostalgia, and how dare Sam Witwer play Kirk wearing Shatner's face when Shatner's still alive. This film was lovingly slavish to canon and it's a beautiful thing.
The word you want here is "continuity". Canon is just the shows and movies. It's macroscopic. Continuity is microscopic.Compare the love and attention to canon in this short film to, say, the short SNW comedy film about Tribbles. Being canon does not mean they are faithful to canon. This film was lovingly slavish to canon and it's a beautiful thing.
I am floored by the reaction. I can’t read the YT comments without crying.Congrats on Unification, by the way. It must be gratifying to see it getting so much praise. Job well done to everyone involved.
Out of curiosity (and obviously you don't have to answer this) ...in your mind and/or script, does the nebulous nature of the short persist, or are there concrete and specific answers to everything presented? (I won't and wouldn't ask for you to clarify specifics, I'm just curious about your relationship with the material.)
Edit: While I'm asking questions that may or may not get answered, may as well float one more.
I'm curious about the level of manual control the "digital make-up" requires. Does any of the real-time render remain in the final product, or does it get 'upgraded' with a better quality result after the fact? I noticed for instance in the shot when TOS Kirk turns to look back, his face smoothly transitions from Shatner to Witwer the more he faces away from camera rather than the Shatner-face simply 'turning off' mid-shot.
Are you able to comment on if there are any further shorts planned, or already in postproduction?I am floored by the reaction. I can’t read the YT comments without crying.
Nice to hear!FWIW from the moment we shared the storyboards with paramount, we had their input every week up to release. The Paramount creative team (listed in the credits) we worked with was wonderful.
it’s too early to say at this time. Are you able to comment on if there are any further shorts planned, or already in postproduction?
Ahh, good luck with the lead up to the 60th anniversary in 2026it’s too early to say at this time.
Fabulous, thank you. That even helps scratch my curiosity itch on the process a tiny bit, as this seems to be a WIP Saavik? Looks what seems to be slippage between the footage and the digital mask. Also there is more in the mind meld scene from the EV that wasn’t in the release edit:
Damn, I didn't see it here before. It really is incredible.I am floored by the reaction. I can’t read the YT comments without crying.
i had 3 specific interpretations in mind, with one I favored most, but did my best to leave nothing to chance that fully locks the viewer in to any of them or negates the others, Carlos and I were in lock step on this. We filmed every shot in the park twice - on two different days, ln my mind that overlap covers the various possibilities even if only one branch made it into what the viewer sees.

You're right that the film was beautiful, and I thought it was a nice tribute. But "slavish to canon," other than being a dubious virtue, is a very relative thing.
True! Maybe I should have phrased my comment differently. The word you want here is "continuity". Canon is just the shows and movies. It's macroscopic. Continuity is microscopic.
Not sure how "slavish" it is. It creates new continuity for the piece to work. Reviving Mitchell. Giving Saavik a son. Kirks trippy journey to the Kelvin Universe.
The tribbles comedy was a Short Trek, not SNW.
Impressive! Also there is more in the mind meld scene from the EV that wasn’t in the release edit:
Narnia did it better."World between worlds" ...a little Star Wars sneaking in there.![]()
It’s not enough to love the Trek that you love, you also have to weaponize it against the Trek that you hate. They can’t just take the W, they’re too spiteful to let an opportunity to shit on Trek they hate pass.I was already seeing people on Twitter and even here that were reacting with "this is the TRUE TREK, not that watered-down woke joke on Paramount+!"
Even for something that’s in progress, that’s impressive as hell.Fabulous, thank you. That even helps scratch my curiosity itch on the process a tiny bit, as this seems to be a WIP Saavik? Looks what seems to be slippage between the footage and the digital mask.
At the risk of quoting the man, "Fascinating."
Interesting to see Twitter comments asking where the clip comes from. You know you've done your job when people think it's old footage.![]()

And the irony is that the short goes out of its way to include direct references to the Trek they claim to hate. I wonder how many of them understand what Yor was all about.
But I’ve seen such comments on that one video that showcases the virtual displays of ship sets from ALL Trek where you get to tour every universe. “I liked this video until it showed the bridge of Disco ten minutes in. Everything after ENT except PIC S3 should be struck from canon”.
I can’t imagine feeling that miserable as a fan.
