Judge for yourself. What I loved about the prequels was that they were radically different from the original trilogy and brought something new to the table. Episode 7 was bad, because it's a remake disguised as a sequel. A lot of people say Episode 9 sucked. At that point, why watch Episode 8? If the trilogy sucks, why watch the spin-offs?
That's why. I don't take any one's word for anything when it comes to media. My favorite films barely get recognition because my preferences vary wildly than most.
As for Episode 7, it's not a remake as much as people think. Yes, it has the structure of ANH, but that story structure is actually very common. Two, TFA exists in a world that ANH has to exist. It isn't just fanciful history that we know nothing about (The Old Republic, The Dark Times, etc), but we know the people here. We know what each of these items mean. Sam Witwer, voice of Darth Maul from The Clone Wars show, notes that the table is reset in TFA in a way that could not happen with the OT. He notes that the world building is not stated, but shown. No one is expecting the First Order, to be as powerful as they are.
Unlike the OT the ST unfolds in a way that is dependent on the last installment. TFA does not end triumphantly but moving on to the next quest. One could easily watch ANH and be satisfied with that (as it should be in my opinion), and one could watch ROTJ in relative isolation. The ST operates differently.
They are better films than they are given credit for. And I would say the same as the PT despite the castigation it received (as did Lucas to the point he quit). But, the only way to know is to watch it yourself.
