Watching The Animated Series For The First Time

I was referencing the sound quality itself not really the musical scores. Something about filmations sound quality even when the characters are talking seems different. I'm not a sound expert so I dont know what it is. But I do like it.

Hmm, interesting. It's true that the sound quality can be affected by the specific recording studio and equipment that are used, though I never noticed the difference you're referring to.

Could be the equipment or the rooms where the did the recordings. I'm not sure. Even the original series voices sound slightly different. But whatever it is I like the way the whole show sounds.

So I just finished the episide "The Survivor". Not a bad episode but a bit like others we've seen before.Things I liked were the way the alien looked. Sufficiently alien looking and something the life action series might have made look cheap. I didn't Ike that the alien shifted into a deflector shield. The episode didn't show it but how did the alien shift into an energy shield and go outside the enterprise to protect it? It didnt make any sense to me. How large of a shield did it morph into? The shape shifter could only shift into something of equal size. But I guess a human sized being can stretch into a pretty expansive thin energy shield. Still kind of odd. They didn't show the alien morphing into the energy shield and we only heard dialogue so im wondering if it was added to the story after the animation was completed. Anyway the actual shape shifting reminded me of the salt vampire's shifting in "The Man Trap". The love story reminded me a bit of the episode "What Are Little Girl's Made Of?" Basically the same story when a women's old fiances memories are survived in another vessel the former being an android and in this case an alien. But still a mildly entertaining enough episide if not particularly original.

Yes, it's a marvelously imaginative design. I don't think the Lower Decks artists got it right at all when they recreated it; they simplified it in a way that made it less interesting and alien.

Alan Dean Foster's novelization tweaked it by explaining that he didn't change into the actual shield, he just changed into a replacement for the components of the shield generator that he'd damaged before.

Maybe, but this one had a much happier and less xenophobic ending. And the Vendorian wasn't really a copy of Winston's mind, just someone who got to know him so well that he came to identify with him.

Ah I was hoping it might be something such as a machine part that the alien morphed into but the episode of course kept it obscure. I need to start reading Alan's novels again. Read a few as a child and liked them. I should have realized he would put some of the animated stories in novels as well as TOS.

I wouldn't mind if they filmed some of these animated episodes with real sets and actors. Maybe after SNW ends it's run.

As a less than wise (but correct) man once said:
My votes would be One of Our Planets, The Time Trap, Jihad, and probably Albatross.

I will amend the answer to include what many would say is obvious: Yesteryear. But only because I want to see James Frain and Mia Kirshner as Sarek and Amanda again.

Finished the infinite vulcan this weekend. Surprising i seem to faintly remember giant clone spock. Probably saw this in a rerun as a kid. But anyway I liked the episode. The alien world looked really interesting. I have to say the design teams that drew the alien worlds did a fantastic job. The plant aliens looked really neat as well.

The thing I didnt like so much was the Kiniculous character. Just weird that he would find this plant world and make a giant clone of himself and become their master. It just seems like something was missing for the chatacter.

All in all I liked the episode.

I would like to read the alan dean foster novels of these stories that Christopher mentioned. Better yet on audio book with TOS sound effects that would be sweet. Someone needs to make detailed audio books of these with the sound effect. I would definitely buy them. I suspect the books have better fleshed out stories.

It didn't come through well in the episode, but the intent was that the reason the clones were giant was that the Phylosians used to be giant before the sickness Keniclius brought. Their ships and equipment were built to that scale, so Keniclius adjusted the clones' size commensurately, since his plan was for the clones to use the Phylosians' fleet to conquer the galaxy in the name of "peacekeeping."

Also, though the Phylosians called him "the Master," it wasn't so much that he took them over as that they welcomed him because he had the same goal of galactic conquest that they'd intended to act on before the disease. Although I admit there is a bit of a "white savior" vibe to the plot.

Its strange but when i was a kid i remember seeing the star trek log books. I never knew they were adaptations of the animated eps. Im looking forward to reading them and seeing how much more fleshed out each story is.

Does anyone know if the Foster books of the animated episodes were ever done in audio book?

Probably not. It wasn't common for books back then, unless it was part of some specialized program for the visually impaired. And I think they've been out of print for a while.

When I was a kid I had all the Alan Dean Foster TAS novelizations. I loved those. Funny, I haven't thought about those books in years/decades until reminded of them in this thread. This site is so good for 60's and 70's nostalgia.

I would be thrilled if they redid a few episodes using the regular cast voices but with new animation, new music and replaced the regulars voices when they voiced other characters. I'd watch and I'd buy it!!
There are about 6 episodes that are a level of quality that they would be worthwhile.

I wouldnt even mind a radio drama with TOS music amd sound effects. An audio book with sound effects would work as well..

It's so weird to me that on the one hand, lots of people object to TOS Remastered replacing the original, comparatively crude visual effects shots in TOS with computer animation, yet at the same time, lots of people say they'd be fine with doing the same thing to TAS. I'm not sure if it's the same people saying both, but it's a double standard nonetheless.

Speaking only for myself, I don't have the same emotional investment in TAS as I have in TOS. I never had any complaints about the live action show or effects, and I'm as hardcore "leave it alone" as it gets, but I recognize that the animation on TAS can be better. I'd love to see some eps redone with brand new CGI anim over the original sound tracks.
