NX Refit

Hardware Wars?

How does VRay compare to Corona...in terms of warmth?

Different products can often have different looks.

A long time ago, I could tell what channel I was watching just by the hue--NBC had a yellow tint to it.

Artifacts could be useful in story telling. There was a ray beam from a Doctor Who episode that was just a thin line of static.

While it was used as a generic weapon, I feel it better used, say, to digitize a character Tron style.

Babylon 5's older CG is perfect for Shadows, but newer CG for Earth Force ships to show rust would be in order for a remastered edition.

There's not much difference in the look of renders in Corona or Vray, and they're owned by the same people. I think even some of the tools/features are identical from what I recall. The only deciding factor for me is that I generally just use whatever my workplace is using at the time because that will be the one I have the greatest fluency in. You can't really go wrong with either, though.

Edit - I've re-comped the image to have a lower contrast - I think I overcooked the first version.

It's just a fleshwound!
Subsequent renders will cut more and more stuff off of the hull, until there's just a bridge module left... 'it's still just a flesh wound!!' :rommie:

Edit - even further tweaks haha
I've added a bit more light in post to the top of the nacelle and darkened down the flare to the top left pf the image in order to rebalance the image a bit. I've also added a bit more complexity to the disruptor bolt that's skewering the Hecla, and finally added a glow below the saucer to indicate a burgeoning fire underneath where the disruptor bolt exits the vehicle.

If I may make two suggestions - the left dorsal pod is obscuring part of the disruptor bolt so it is harder to get a read on what is happening. Could you move the camera a little bit to see the whole hit? The exit explosion is also perhaps too subtle to tell that it is an explosion instead of say the glow of the lower sensor dome. Perhaps a more elongated explosion in the direction of the bolt ?

I think you've got a point there. I'm going to do some more compositing to make that saucer explosion read a bit clearer. I want to continue to continue to do more stuff like this now that I've got a decent explosion workflow sorted; so more renders with a greater focus on composition to come. :)

Edit, so this is where I'm at with the comp so far - Continued the disruptor bolt past the pod and into the explosion, and added more fire underneath. I've added a small bolt to the nacelle to try and tie those diagonal lines together with the direction of the Birds of Prey. I think that's as far as I can push this image in post, the next image set will have to be a re-render from a different camera angle.

Brilliant work! Any chance of getting an sto file to 3D print this at home so I can regularly revel in your masterwork?

Thanks for your kind words, DrNicket! I've investigated the possibility of converting this model to .stl format a while back, and unfortunately it turns out that this model was built in a way that makes it awkward for 3d printing: Pretty much every hull panel (and a lot of the geometry the panels sit on top of) is a non-manifold mesh, which 3d printing apps seem to hate. It would take too long to plug all the holes in the mesh, but I'll be bearing that in mind for any future models I end up making.
