Spoilers Star Trek: Prodigy General Discussion Thread

I really struggled to break into this show, but I think I’m finally getting there. Just finished watching Kobayashi.

I thought they might hold off on the Legacy stuff for a little longer, but it was nice to see some old faces.

The only thing I found distracting was that I could identify which episodes/movies they’d taken Nimoy’s voice from. Of course, by doing so, sometimes the dialogue felt quite forced at times, but so far… I’m finally aboard the Protostar.

I find I end up watching two at a time. One is just not enough. I’ll probably crack the next one on later.

Here's a fun Prodigy fact for you: if you watch two episodes a day, starting on an odd-numbered episode, you're almost always saving the better story for last. I'm not saying odd episodes are bad and even are good, but when you pair them up in that way, the even episode tends to be the best of the two.

(Kobayashi is an even episode).

Bah. I watched the next one so I’m out of your sequence.

If it’s really better that way, I’ll course correct and watch just one tomorrow.

If you have the time for it, it's a very binge-able show.

I work 100% from home. Time is on my hands. I don’t wanna rush it though.

I will be curious to see your thoughts by the end.

To be clear, and I don’t want to be a Debbie-Downer… I’m not yet seeing the all singing, all dancing best Star Trek show in years that many wax lyrical about, but I am impressed with the character work so far.

As of episode 7, it’s Dal and Gwyn who’ve had most of the limelight. The most recent one I’ve watched, First Con-Tact… the way that Dal finds he was betrayed really made me feel for him. Likewise with Gwyn and the Diviner choosing the Protostar over her…

So far, Jankom, Rok and Zero are cardboard but I’m sure they will develop.

I know you had a hard time getting along with it as well… as I recall you got about as far as I did (about 4 episodes) before losing interest.

It’s worth it though. Nice show and having a motley crew on the bridge of a super advanced Starfleet vessel really feels like something new. For a show that’s branded Nickelodeon, there’s a very surprising amount of depth to the whole thing.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra were Nickelodeon shows. So it's not that surprising.

Well, I haven’t seen those shows so I was surprised, Christopher.

It may surprise you to know that your perspective is not the only one that exists.

Still, nice of you to choose the tiniest bit of my post for your usual tedious pedantry act, whilst ignoring the positives I just heaped upon the show.

It's nice to see that it has the depth, though I'm not worried about depth so much as characters which were hit and miss and definitely hit odd chords in me.

I would recommend something like Gargoyles as another example of really deep animated show that is a little less kid if this ends up being something you like. Closer to Young Adult or Teen interest than perhaps Prodigy.

Nickelodeon did well with Avatar: the Last Airbender, but that's not for everyone either because it has a unique style.

Keep going - show improves as season 1 moves on. And Season 2 is even better.

I too, struggled for first few episodes. Show could of definitely started stronger IMO

For me, S3 Picard and SNW have been the best if the new bunch. With LD and Prodigy battling for the bronze.

DISCO and S1-2 of PIC had some good moments, good/great eps, but fell short of having a great season.

I think Time Amok is where we start getting some character development beyond the main two.

Time Amok was the episode where we moved from "Kids Show" to quality Trek series for me. There were some good episodes before that, but I started feeling sympathy for the characters, especially Rok, and to see them finally come together as a family was actually more emotional than I thought. Everything else kind of just blended into place after that.

They aren't, but for me, it became more than just a kids show.

See, but that's exactly the kind of condescending phrasing I object to -- "just a kids' show." Surely our mindset as adults should be that our children always deserve the very best we're capable of giving them. Children are important. Their entertainment should be too.

Just looking at it objectively, I have never found "adult" shows to be proportionally higher in average quality or intelligence than kids' shows. The only real difference is their levels of sex, violence, and profanity, and none of that has anything to do with the worth or quality of a story. There are countless grown-up shows that deserve to be dismissed with a "just," and plenty of kids' shows that don't.

I get what you are saying, but it was originally marketed as a kids show. That's what I was reacting too. No condescension intended.

I think it's just the Nickelodeon label and cartoonish 3D animation that give the initial impression of "a kids show", and that's all there is to it. Perhaps toddler show would be more precise for clearly different types of stories and dialogue, like Paw Patrol, Bluey, Teletubbies, etc., since "kids" is such a wide age range that it can include teens as well. And PRO is certainly not a toddler show :D

And I still don't understand why that should be put in scare quotes as if there's something bad about it. It is a kids' show, openly and proudly, and there's not a damn thing wrong with that. Many kids' shows are brilliant. Batman: The Animated Series was a kids' show. Avatar: The Last Airbender was a kids' show, and it was on Nickelodeon. Hell, Doctor Who is a kids' show, and Star Wars is a kids' movie franchise. A ton of the stuff adult SF/fantasy fans love was created for children. That doesn't mean it's unsuitable for adults, just that children can enjoy it along with their parents.

And while we're at it, Prodigy's 3D animation is some of the best I've ever seen on TV.
