There isn't?!

The trailer.

I don't recall seeing very many people judging the finished film, but I may have overlooked them.
I see lots of people judging the trailer.

I would be simply glad if I knew what is it about. Instead they just show shootings, fancy dressings and everybody commenting on Georgiou.

The more I think about it...

This is just a terrible trailer. One of the worst I've seen. My expectations for the production have been dutifully lowered here, but ultimately, it's a bad trailer that might very well be making a decent movie look worse than it is.

There's nothing wrong in judging ( even harshly) a trailer in a vacuum. This subforum is all about future projects . So it's very speculative by nature.

Even if the movie is good, good promotion can help getting more eyeballs to see it. Every little helps. Feedback on how well a trailer is received helps the marketing team make improvements and or adjustments on their approach for the future.

So yes even uniformed, premature feedback can be productive .

There were only two things I thought about this trailer:
- The girl power vibes were strong with this
- Hardcore Trek fans would hate this

Honestly, it looks so dumb. And this was originally supposed to be a streaming show? Yeesh.

Again, it is hard to tell much about it, since it is only a short video but I think they have a little problem. Becouse this was retooled from series to movie they have now only one story to and it will be concentrated very profoundly on Georgiou since she is a)protagonist, b) Yeoh and c)someone whose redemption simply must be adressed.

Which is not promising at all.

Trailers are about putting the best foot forward.

I think this trailer was trying to convey a "not your nerd's Star Trek film" type of vibe. In reality, this film is really only for people who watched and liked the first two and a bit seasons of Discovery, but all the hardcore fans have already made up their minds on whether or not they want to see it. So they're leaning on it being completely different than normal Trek which... I don't think will work very well.

As for me, Empress Georgiou is perhaps my least favorite character in the whole franchise, and from this trailer I don't think my opinion will be changing.

I had no expectations on what this would or would not be.

I like it, because it's so different. It's Star Trek, but different than regular Star Trek.
Yikes.

I'm not a fan of the attempts that Discovery made repeatedly to rehabilitate MU Georgiou. I'm also not a fan of the attempts post DS9 to retcon Section 31 from an evil conspiracy within the heart of the Federation that subverts its values, to "hard men doing hard things."

Before seeing anything, these were my main grievances with this show/movie.

I actually do like the cheesy "non Star Trek" look - all the dyed hairs, crazy costumes, weird lightning - why not?

However, after watching the trailer, I have the fear that this group of characters aren't actually part of the story, but "just there", assembled because this was once a tv show that needed a full cast, and now will actually distract/bog down the plot.
No matter how much the trailer tried to give the "Suicide Squad/GotG" vibe, it really feels more like a tv pilot episodes re-cut.

Again though, I think there's a legitimate place for a spy thriller within the Star Trek universe. But this ain't it. It's not even trying to be it. In comparison, while I really hated Secret Invasion, the trailer to that did really promise a paranoid spy thriller (even if the series itself failed to deliver).

This all feels...perfunctory, for some reason. They had to use Michelle Yeoh, they had to use her MU Georgiou character, and (for some reason) there was this sunk cost fallacy that it had to involve Section 31. But that wasn't the story that they actually wanted to tell (once the two Disco writers who first pitched the concept left), so we ended up with a ragtag band of misfits who blow shit up and aren't even trying to be clandestine.

I'm also really let down by how much backstory is within the trailer, and presumably in the show as well. I feel like we've had more than enough now, across 2.5 seasons of Discovery, and would have preferred if the series started "blank slate" with some easter eggs for those who watched her character arc in Discovery, not feeling like they have to recap everything for the uninitiated (because no one who isn't already a Disco fan is gonna be watching this).

To be fair... This is exactly what every single piece of live-action Star Trek is now since the JJ Abrams reboot.
SNW being the sole exception.

I'll see it once just to check it out. Apart from that, it was definitely the thing I'm looking forward to least out of the SDCC panel. Generic action, looks like Trek's answer to the Suicide Squad, and I'm still irked by the franchise continuing to rehabilitate a genocidal dictator.

Mirror Georgiou is basically a caricature. The trailer was pretty bad. They keep hyping she's an Academy Award winning actress but then have her overact as a character who makes Jar Jar Binks seem nuanced in comparison.

Interesting angle they're going with the James Bond vibe and trying to make Section 31 look glamorous (they're trying to hard and it has the opposite effect on me), considering they were straight up DS9 villains with no attempt to glamorize them or make them look cool during DS9.

Bashir: Look everyone! Section 31 are genocidal murderers! They're evil! They authorized the phase cloak on the Pegasus! They tried to wipe out the Founders with a genetically engineered plague!

Mirror Georgiou: Get lost you creep. Still pining over Jadzia? She'd never even look at a nerd like you. Someone lost out on the Khan-hunkiness when they were passing you your agument pills.

Bashir: Hey now, I'm speaking on behalf of the values and principles that--

Mirror Georgiou: And you won the Dominion war because of the virus yes?

Worf: Section 31 is a critical division of Starfleet Intelligence.

Bashir: Worf not you too. Is anyone going to listen to me?
