Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

In the deadline article

Although the next season has wrapped, this source predicts the final episode has been left open-ended, with the possibility remaining that Gatwa could regenerate into his successor if he chooses to exit. Gatwa’s agents hadn’t responded to Deadline’s request for comment by press time.

Very interesting! I'm surprised they don't refer to Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as having previously played characters in Doctor Who. I imagine that means they're playing entirely new characters. The only one whose character is confirmed is Jemma Redgrave as Kate.

Being the twisted being I am, I would’ve loved it if Russell and Gugu were reprising their old roles and Jemma was playing a new one.

"This isn’t Tovey’s first brush with the Whoniverse, as he previously appeared in “Doctor Who” as Alonso Frame over a decade ago. Mbatha-Raw is also no stranger to the TARDIS, appearing as Martha Jones’ sister Tish in four episodes. Davies confirmed that they will play new roles in the spinoff."

I wonder what the big mystery box/reveal of the spin off is going to be, and how annoying its going to be when it doesn't get solved and RTD once again taunts the fans for expecting an explanation to literally anything :sigh:

I'd complain about this spinoff being a bad idea, but anything that distracts RTD for even a second from screwing over something in the main show is worthwhile at this point. Plus, as a spin off it literally has to be better then Torchwood at the bare minimum.

I'd forgotten that Moffat wrote this, because the clip they showed felt like Moffat-y nonsense.

I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop that the Doctor has to visit Joy as a child so he can understand why she's lonely

I really have to wonder if there's some timey whimey shenanigans with Martha Jones family

- Martha and her cousin Adeola Oshodi looking exactly alike.

Now Martha's sister looks like another completely different person

I just feel like this could be a long arc story that's untapped for potential.

Did they ever explain why Morton Dill and Steven Taylor looked the same?

Or how about Commander Maxil and the 6th Doctor?

Nothing wrong with them tying the characters together, nothing wrong with not tying them together.

I just find it funny how some people have such strong responses to people having opinions to either of them.

Ok, I just noticed this trailer. Besides the fact that the episode looks like annoying junk with a terrible guest character, I am outright shocked at how bad that silurian (?) looks. I thought that they were getting (at least a bit of) Disney money, how does that Silurian look so damn bad? In general I think that NuWho Silurians are a lazy redesign, obviously done to be cheaper make up in general compared to trying to do a more accurate update to the old silurian design (which they actually did at least prototype before getting cheap with it), but the one in that trailer is like the budget version of an already budget design.

Its getting sad how much cheaper everything looks in the RTD2 era. I may have hated Chibnall's writing but his eras episodes frequently seemed to look better then its budget would suggest. With RTD its all cheap green screens and cheaper makeup jobs. Did the decent Sutekh CG drain the budget from most of the season and the Christmas special?

Looks like fun to me. What’s so terrible about the guest character? The clip doesn’t really tell us much about her.
