The unnecessary reboot/remake of the week thread

I think it would be a mistake to even think about until they see what Schmid can do. I'm sure he'll be fine for the purposes of the show, but the thing that made Franks such a memorable character to begin with was entirely on Watson. "Probie."

The producer of Backdraft is talking about remaking it with Glen Powell. I suppose a new movie set in the same universe would be forced to acknowledge Backdraft 2 existed.

Backdraft 2 had an interesting premise (the idea of a fire investigator), but it didn't really work within the context of its own narrative. Lots of potential, but it was painful to watch.

I was going to make a joke about they could share resources with NCIS Origins until I remembered a young Frank series would likely take place in the 60s or 70s.

They also shoot on opposite coasts. Blue Bloods filming in SoCal would look like Quantum Leap 2.0 using the Universal lot every week.

A movie version of 24 is said to be in early development. No word on plot or whether it will feature Jack Bauer/Keifer Sutherland.

IIRC, writer Billy Ray was linked to a movie of it ages ago but they then went with the London based sequel series instead. Presumably a film faces the difficulty of not being 24 hours long, with the real-time gimmick (used in Johnny Depp’s Nick of Time some years before 24) being less effective over 2 hours or so.

What is the point of a 24 movie that doesn't even take in account that part of the idea of 24 was each episode featured one hour in a day and also doesn't even have Keifer Sutherland as Jack Bauer? Sounds like someone just wants to do some kind of CIA/action movie and just toss on a brand name on it even though the movie will have nothing to actually do with the tv show.

Well, we don’t yet know that it won’t, just so far he isn’t confirmed one way or the other. I would like to think that after the Keifer-less 24: Legacy failed to set the world on fire, they will try to get him back, but it’s possible that they’ll cast an A-lister as a new CTU agent.

With you on the time frame thing though. IIRC, they previously looked at just setting it over a single day but not in real time; doing 3 40-minute real-time segments spread out over a fictional day or just having the first half or so of the film across most of a day and then the last half in real time. Not sure how any of these would work. Mind you, the last 2 seasons (24: Live Another Day and 24: Legacy) actually only had 12 episodes each.

The best outcome might be if they came up with a really good premise and plot but decided they couldn’t do it in a movie and so made another season of 24!

I could see them bringing Jack Bauer back and teaming him up with a big star like as his partner or something. Maybe Bauer is brought to help stop a terrorist from releasing a computer virus that will destroy the internet or something and he is teamed up with Emma Stone as a computer expert or something like that.

Eh, 24 always took liberties with hos the real time thing worked, my favorite being that the clock continued to tick during commercial breaks but conveniently nothing important ever happened during them. At this point, it's just a silly little gimmick that I wouldn't miss anyway.

But if you remove it then you just got a standard Mission Impossible action movie type of thing. No real hook to make it feel unique.

Wow. I was today years old when I found out there had actually been a sequel. I was a big fan of the original. Sorry to hear it was such a disaster.

It occurs also that only M:I, Bond and Bourne seem to be sure fire box office hits for spy movies. And Bourne minus Matt wasn’t a huge hit. On streaming, there have been the likes of Grey Man, Citadel, the Terminal List and Extraction in the 24 mould. Keifer is now 57 and hasn’t really been a cinematic box office draw for a long time, assuming that they want to go with him.

I have to wonder what a 24 movie, with or without the real-time novelty/gimmick/premise can bring to the party to persuade viewers to come away from their streaming services and into a cinema?

They are popular but mostly on tv these days it seems.

Yeah, I should’ve clarified that I meant cinema box office in respect of the big 3.

Meanwhile, speaking of Keifer, his 1990 hit Flatliners seems to be getting some sort of revival. This is a really badly written article but as far as I can see there is going to be a new novel based on a previous script and which will then be adapted as a movie. But I could well have misinterpreted the article:

Yeah, best way to describe it is that it's lacked agency. While the original movie had the action centered around fires, the sequel switched things up to things happening after the fact. Which could have been interesting had it been done well, but it was so dull.

There was no way it could be good. Universal 1440 is the banner in which they make straight-to-video low budget sequels of the most random movies -- Kindgergarten Cop, Doom, Inside Man, Hard Target, R.I.P.D., Undercover Brother. Often times the sequels have nothing to do with the original (how does a true story like Jarhead which is about not seeing combat get three sequels about combat?). Somehow Backdraft 2 got two original cast members back, but no real budget for fire fighting.
