"Star Trek Begins" - The 'Origins' Film Discussion

Paramount has two Trek films in development. One is prequel focusing on humanity’s early contact with aliens and the formation of the Federation. Andor director Toby Haynes is attached to direct a script by Seth Grahame-Smith that is rumored to take place largely on Earth.

I'm not enthusiastic about the Earth setting.

Just for comparison:
25% of the runtime of Star Trek Into Darkness takes place on earth (34 of of 134 minutes). 18% for Star Trek 2009.

A Star Trek "prequel" film set on Earth pre-Federation might just be the least appealing option for a Star Trek movie that is reasonably possible. The only reason to do a movie like that is to save money by filming most of the production in modern day Earth locations and maybe use some slight CG to make it look like its the future (Picard Season 2 did this for a whole season of TV). At least Star Trek IV had a point to being set on Earth, and it did something interesting with the characters being fish out of water in the setting. This potential movie just sounds bland and boring, so it makes sense that someone who worked on Andor is attached to it.

As for a potential 4th Kelvinverse film, I'm up for it if Kurtzman isn't allowed anywhere near it. Star Trek Beyond was a legitimately great film, hurt by a bad ad campaign and the fact that Into Darkness dragged the reputation of the Kelvinverse into the gutter with the general audience (even though I thought that ID was better then ST09). I'd want a 4th film to be more like STB if they are going to make a fourth movie.

I dunno, I'm rather intrigued by the idea of a film showing the literal groundwork needed to be done before Trek can do some Trekking. Besides, even a terrestrially-based movie will have to have some sort of action as a pre-requisite.

I suspect we'll have to agree to disgree though, because I rather liked Andor and found it a very interesting series. I also liked the season of The Expanse when they were stuck on that alien planet, and also when Amos Burton was stuck in future-Baltimore, so I guess I'm a sucker for ground based plotlines. :)

I’m not enthused either, but that’s one of the dumbest things I’ve read. Your attempt to quantify everything through your lens of bias is laughable.

It'll be Star Trek: Mission Impossible.

A crackshot team is assembled to thwart a possible assassination attempt at the founding of the Federation.

It'll have all the fun action and clever espionage that any general audiences could hope for.

The team will have an Andorian weapons expert, a Tellarite demolition expert, and a Vulcan tech expert. They'll all be lead by a Human field agent/operative, probably named Kirk.

I'm joking, but only a little.

Why joke at all?

That sounds like a movie worth watching.

I remember they wanted the first season or at least part of it based on Earth. So maybe they'll take that plot point and run with it in some way shape or form. I just hope the movie bring in legacy characters Like Zefram Cochrane, Emory Erickson and Henry Archer. people that were instrumental in making Starfleet possible with their engines and transporter.

How does that work? If it set on Earth and dealing with the early federation?

Didn't you just answer your own question? ;)

I would not mind a Trek film taking a different approach. May even...dare I say it...expand my imagination of what a Trek film could be.

That almost sounds counterproductive.

I'm not saying that's what they're doing. I'm just saying that's what it sounds like to me. I'm not sure why they feel the need to have two simultaneous Trek movie productions in the works when one sounds like it has the flimsiest of premises as an actual 'Star Trek' film, and the other sounds like a bona-fide KT sequel film (and which neither one may even be produced if past history is any indication.)

It would never happen but it would be fun to see First Contact / Federation Founding from the Vulcan POV.

Back in The Day you could have Star Trek Movies at the same time as TV shows because you got to see The Old Cast (or in TNG's case The New Old Cast). And Trek V and VI also gave you Movie 23rd Century to boot.

What would we be getting at the movie theater (in a time when it's hard enough to get people out of the house rather than waiting a few months to watch at home anyway) that we can't get at home AND get more of it right now?

The only thing that would fit the old "Get to see the Crew" bill right now would be another Chris Pine movie.

Maybe someone thinks they can make "Cochrane-heimer"?
