Spoilers The Acolyte

Just a question to all of you - what is the central theme of the show?
While it's not as thematically rich as, say, Andor, neither is it a thematic black hole like, say, Ahsoka.

Powerful institutions, no matter how well-intentioned, are in danger of ultimately serving only their own interests and self-preservation over those they are purportedly selected to protect.

The episode guide is up, and there's a few bits of trivia worth mentioning. First off as if there was any doubt; that was indeed cortosis. They're also name dropping The Stranger/Qimir's combat technique as tràkata (taking advantage of a saber's ability to deactivate mid-combat), which was a thing in Legends that IIRC originated from a fanon concept. I'm not sure if it was ever paired with cortosis, but as we saw it's a natural and effective pairing.

Speaking of cortosis: I'm just now remembering that the fortress the witch coven set up shop in was part of an old mining facility. I think I remarked before that there's generally only one reason to build a fortress over a mine, and that's if what's in the mind is very rare, very valuable, and/or very very dangerous. Could it have been a cortosis mine, and that's part of why the Jedi were there to begin with? Is that part of a deal they made with the Sith? That last part feels like a stretch, but unless Mae knew how to pilot a starship as a child, someone had to swing by that otherwise uninhabited planet to pick her up, and we know she ended up with the Sith, so it seems to track that said Sith would likely have to have at least known of that place.

Also, it hasn't escaped me that they've updated Qimir's databank entry, and it's still being very cagey about whether he's actually a Sith. He almost certainly is, but the possibility remains that the two actual Sith could show up to put an end to him. I doubt it, but it's possible! What did strike me about him, was that I think this is the first time we've ever seen a dark side user heal with the force (Nightsister Magiks notwithstanding), which given how it works (selflessly giving of one's own lifeforce) seems like exclusively a lightside thing. Not that I'm saying this is wrong, just interesting in it's implications.

A few things I noticed more on the rewatch; the cortosis brieftly takes on the colour of the blade it extinguises, which is a neat visual flair and a fun way to show it's absorbing the energy. I also noticed a few musical quotes in the score (honestly, the first time the score has really jumped out at me at all) including the final stinger from 'Anakin's Dark Deeds' as well as a partial quote of the Kylo Ren theme. I'll have to go back and listen more carefully and see if there's more. Either way, I appreciate the non-standard quotes and not just going for the obvious 'Emperor's Theme', 'Imperial March', or even the ever stalward 'Force Theme' (unless they did and I just didn't notice.)

Back in the day there was a book that featured Darth Maul. I got about halfway through it when I had the realization that none of these characters that I had grown to like were going to survive till the end of the book and it was therefore not going to be a satisfying read for me. I put the book down and never looked back without regret. I kind of wish I'd had that sort of realization before starting this show.

So all we have left are basically our three points of view characters: Mae, Osha, and Sol.

However there is still Venestra that'll need to come into the mix with her purple weapon. And that there are three episodes left. One is almost certainly Mae's point of view of the incident 16 years ago. We might also get Sol's points of view with it.

There should be a starship chase in the rings if I remember the trailer correctly.

That really might not be the best comparison to make given the things they've done.

This was a great episode.
I was mildly disappointed that Qimir actually was the Master, I was hoping for more of a surprise in the reveal of their identity.
On the other hand, the deaths of Jecki and Yord were a huge shock. One would of them would have been a surprise, but I didn't not expect to lose them both.
Damn, the fights in this one were fantastic.
I hope they don't drag out the twins switch for to long.

I enjoyed the fight scenes. Ahsoka had a ton of lightsaber duels and I found them mostly pretty bland, this felt more dynamic and visceral (though I agree that it did cut away from fights maybe a bit too often.)

I'm happy that they were willing to kill off main characters (possibly including Pip!), though definitely sad that Dafne Keen didn't get a bigger part in the end. But hey she could always play another character some day in a future Star Wars project without the alien make-up.

One wonders if Qimir is actually a Sith, or if he is more like a Knight of Ren. Someone that wants to be a Sith but hasn't yet found them.
However if he is a Sith, he seems more like the apprentice than the Master. Unless his Master died earlier, he seems more like Dooku or Vader trying to gain an Acolyte to defeat the Master.

Though he seems very skilled for someone that doesn't seem that old.

Saw an interesting observation in a review video.

We know Vernestra has a saber whip. Well in the old comics, Luke fought a force user using a similar weapon, and his counter to it was using two sabers, one of the shorter than the other, just like Qimir’s can do. So I wonder if that’s intentional

That's something I thought of too. If the Sith were considered only a myth at this point in time, he might have been saying that the Jedi would probably considered him one even if he really wasn't. Maybe Qimir is simply a Dark Side user trying to create his own order, I dunno...

Probably. She is one of the older, I suppose, elite Jedi Masters in this time period. And this show is pulling deep cuts into the old EU sources.

The Dark Woman, I think.

EW.com has a fairly in depth article about last night's episode with interviews with Leslye Headland and most of the cast.
Interesting info from the article:
The official name/title for Manny Jacinto's Master is The Stranger
Daphne Keen and Charlie Barnett came into the show knowing when Jecki and Yord were going to die, so it became a running joke on set that they were going to be dying soon
The chair and position that Kelnacca died in was so uncomfortable that Joonas Suotamo had to get up and move around every four minutes.
The article repeatedly refers to The Stranger as a Sith Lord, and think at least once was in a direct quote from Jacinto or Headland.
Jacinto did almost all of the fight scenes himself, even when he had the helmet on.

I find it interesting that they refer to him as a Sith Lord because I definitely heard Kylo Ren/The First Order's theme at times in the last episode when he showed up.
