Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

Yeah, I like these more than I like Disco S1/Picard S1 ships, but I'm still not going to get them at that size, and definitely not at that price. Even if I was interested, that price really puts them out of contention. Things very much aren't the same as they were in 2018 when they launched the larger collections, let alone 2013.

For one, in 2013, I didn't have nearly 300 little starships taking up room.

Aside from the already discussed issue of releasing ships nobody wanted at a scale and price nobody wanted in the later collections, I can't help but feel that the sheer number of new ships from newer Trek is offputting. It takes up to TNG season 3 and the Ambassador to get up to 8 Federation starship classes. Discovery hits that by the end of the pilot and keeps going. Picard has more Romulan ships in one season than the first thirty years put together. And I don't even want to start counting Disco Klingon ships...

I wonder if the advent of cheaper and easier CGI has meant that it's just too easy to make new ship types. It used to be that a new kind of ship was a bit of a big deal, and it was always interesting to see how they modified old models, or created new ships out of model kits and spare parts. We'd get to know everything. Now, it's just... so many new ships that it's no longer as interesting.

There's also the fact that nobody in charge really understands the old class/name/registry 'standards', but that's a whole other rant.
Exactly that, the advent of CGI at the end of Voyager and whole of Enterprsie allowed "ships of the week" to not be redressed old ships (though reused CGI models were still done) So it is ALOT cheaper than building a whole new practical model.

Speaking for myself, I need both the Titan-A and the Enterprise-G.
It makes sense they would have both. A repaint/redecal is a very inexpensive way to artificially increase stock availability and the OCD collectors such as myself will need to have both to ensure a complete set. It's an easy win.

Got an email from Fanhome today that states
The collection will cover all the modern Star Trek series including Strange New Worlds, Discovery, Lower Decks and Prodigy.

So I guess they only licensed the newer shows, although I guess they can still do and old ships that were at the Starfleet Museum in Picard, lol.

Fortunately for Fanhome, the timing of Eaglemoss' demise gives them a backlog of new ships and shuttles from the modern shows before we have to start worrying too much about less desirable ships of the week.

And the trick is to start with the less desirable one, because more people would only get one if they made the 1701-G first.

I don't know if CGI is necessarily cheaper (anymore), but I think it's definitely easier. Instead of art department model makers spending lots of time designing a ship and making sure it could actually work as a physical model, it can now all be done quickly with just keystrokes without having to build a physical model (with real lighting electronics) at all.

I put this off for a while, but I got one last order from Master Replica before the end. Given how few of the remaining ships fell into the category of both ones I don't yet have, and ones I'm even mildly interested in, I settled on the Nightingale, the Cousteau, and the Bajoran solar sailor.

I never liked Voyager recycling a Fed fighter as a much larger alien ship, and mainly got the Nightingale for comparison. I think they did a good job with this one. For those who don't know, Robbie and Garrett, having rewatched Voyager for their podcast, are now watching DS9 with Armin and Terry, and are a few eps into season 2. It'll be interesting, once they get to "The Maquis" if Garrett recognizes the ship. (Probably not).

At #18, the solar sailor is, by far, the lowest numbered model I've gotten in years. I still don't know why they did that one so early in the set. (I'd still rather have Degra's ship or the Bajoran scout). It looks and feels incredibly fragile, and given how many stories I've read online of broken ships, I'll have to be careful with this one. I don't really like that the cabin is covered by the clip of the stand in front, but I guess there was nowhere else to put it.

The real standout here is the Coustea. I never liked the "flying saucer" look of the Enterprise-D captain's yacht, and didn't really like the look of this one in the box, but once I opened it, I was pleasantly surprised. I like the softer, rounder nacelles that look reminicent of the Enterprise-D and other TNG era fed ships. Having them slung down ever so slightly, rather than up, looks good, too. Looking at it from the front, or a 45 degree angle, this still looks like kind of a leisure vessel a captain would use to entertain VIP's. With this ship, I now have every ship featured in "Insurrection".

Apart from the tactical cube, there isn't much left out there that interests me. Most of it's kitbashes or other designs I just didn't like, or stuff from never shows and movies I've never gotten into. I never had the money or space for XL's, but I might consider the Oberth and Nebula, because they were technically different ships than the standard sized ones.

I still regret the handful of designs I wanted to see, but never did. (Admit it, that "Vanguard" style Starbase 6 from the remastered "Ultimate Computer" would've been really great), but I'm content with what I have.

I still hope to get a few more "Orville" ships, eventually, though.

Their “alien of the week” nonsense took its toll on the VFX people that struggled to keep up with the writers.

You think that’s bad, Assan’s racer ship from “Drive” was basically a rounded-off Cylon Raider, right down to the double-pentagon symbol, which goes all the way back to TOS BSG (1978).

Well, I never saw any version of BSG, so it didn't bother me.

I think they had enough generic alien of the week ships that they could've gone with something else for the Nightingale, though.

I like the Nightingale and love that the one-off Peregrine class did get a refurb. I remember how excited I was to have both models.

Really wish we could’ve gotten all the new ships from “Year of Hell”.

It's obviously inspired by the Raider, but the Imhotep ship is an entirely new design, there's nothing actually in common.
Respectfully disagree. I mean, yeah, it's the first (and last) time we've seen that design - it was obviously "new", insofar as the physical model was built by the VFX department specifically for that episode, but there is much in common:
  • The central forward-facing cockpit
  • Twin rear-facing engines in the back
  • Two conical reactor-looking things behind the cockpit (identical in design to the raider)
  • Two recessed areas along the wings where the original Raider's weapons would have been mounted
  • The fore-mentioned double-pentagon logo on each wing tip is a direct rip-off. That is the symbol of the Cylon Alliance that was located in the same positions on all Raider wings
To say that it has "nothing actually in common" is... well... just simply not accurate and somewhat contradictory to the first statement of being "inspired by the Raider".

Although thank you for reminding me that it belonged to the Imhotep. I forgot that little detail. I need to go back and adjust my database entry for that ship.

My guess would be that it was a fan-made Cylon-style ship, either by someone at the VFX studio, or one that was included with the software as a royalty-free demo piece, though I don't recognize it specifically. The timing isn't right for it to have been made for Foundation's demo for the SDS Galactica reboot (and there are no new Cylon ships seen in that, anyway), and, looking at EAS, the ship actually first appeared as a Cardassian Workbee, though my guess would be the "Drive" version is the original and the Cardassian one is the redress, even though the Cardassian one was used on the show first.

Okay, 'in common' was the wrong choice of words. It definitely has a lot in common. What I should have said was 'nothing reused' or, what I probably wanted to say, 'no common parts'. (I'd still have been wrong, I think, those two cone stack things look the same, as you noted, but I'd missed those.)

I guess they’ll do the Ent-D from Picard as well, which might be a nice variant for Galaxy-class fans!
