Spoilers The Boys Season 4 Discussion ( Spoilers)

The Boys has already been renewed for season 5 (avclub.com)

I spent the last few days rewatching the first three seasons of The Boys. I haven't seen the spinoff yet.

It is amazing to me that somehow that everyone was able to pull off such a strong story with the limited number of episodes that they had to work with. In this era of streaming, where people struggle to tell an interesting and engaging story in 8- or 10-episode seasons, the Boys team did it.

Well, I watched Gen V. It's a step down from the Boys in many ways. I am hoping that it is a one-off thing, not a sign of things to come.

So apparently Kripke always had a 5-year plan for the show. Makes sense, as that's what he originally had for Supernatural.

So then Kripke is going to leave after S5 and someone will come in and the Boys will run for another decade? At least this time it looks like the finale will be FINAL and a conclusion to the story.

Which from what I remember in the comics did have a definitive ending.

Not to surprised by the Season 5 news, it does feel like we're closing in on the endgame.

I think Kripke has a bit more control here. However, I did see that there are expected to be spinoffs in addition to Gen V.

Just finished the first three episodes and Damn. This season's off to a fine start.

Got to say though, the kid who plays Ryan is definitely starting to noticeably age. His voice is changing. Not criticizing or anything, it was just something that jumped out at me.

That Ice Rink scene was making me laugh just because it was reminding me of two different SNL skits where they had random freaky carnage happening. Farwell. Mr Bunting and then Martin Short/Steve Martin did a Christmas Carol spoof in a similar fashion.

Hughie's plot armor in the ice rink was massive though.

So now i had the time to watch the first 3 episodes and honestly i'm disappointed and bored, i don't know which is worse. It is The Boys alright and that's the problem - the show is not evolving. All the cornerstones are there, i.e. blood and gore, Homelander and all the other Supes are Psychos and evil, some disgusting use of Superpowers ( usually sexual in nature) and The Boys are not getting any closer to their goals and are fighting internally and with their own personal problems. Media and social criticism continues but amped up to 11 and so on.

If this is enough for people to go on i'm ok with it, i started playing on my phone in the third episode and didn't feel i was missing any subtlety or plot points which is not good at all. By the 4th season a show should evoive somewhat from its original premise and drive some kind of plot forward if it has a central plot yet we are at about the same place we were at the end of season 1 and to me that's a step back.

Let's see if the show picks up any momentum or has some surprise in store apart from trying to outdo any gross supe power application.

I really enjoyed the scenes with Deep and Ambrosius. For once, I felt sorry for him. I also really loved the scene with Ryan at Butcher's house playing foosball. Billy is finally seeing what kind of kid Ryan really is. The poor kid is just another ego trip for Homelander. And speaking of, he's is not handling aging well!

I do find Homelander's midlife crisis an interesting storyline in the season so far. I especially like the scene where he nearly convinced the Deep to blow A-Train and then went off about how everyone is an insufferable sycophant. It's both amusing and a really intriguing insight into his disturbed psyche.

"Convinced" is one word that could be used, ordered is another ;) Proving a point that he's surrounded by sycophants yet he kills or at least hurts anyone who dares to challenge/oppose him.

Thing is that Homelander doesn't really know what he wants and what would make him happy. He wants power, he has it and he's not happy. He wants people to be afraid of him, they are and it's still not enough etc. Narcissists can never be satisfied and he's a perfect example of one.
