If Mr. Sulu ever come to SNW, how to make him Interesting

How to make Sulu interesting? Why, just give him a sword of course!

I would much rather see Gary Mitchell appear, and I think McCoy would be a good element to show near the end as they're transferring the Enterprise to Kirk (assuming that's how the show ends). I'm not sure how I feel about Sulu appearing, and I definitely don't think we should see Chekov at all.

I think Chekov would be like 14? So definitely not.

That's why I said in the OP that Sulu is the glorious background character.

Unnecessary, and even George Takei isn't a fan of it. I agree with his reasoning... he played the character as straight. It's at best mildly insulting to make the character gay just because he is gay in real life. He's an actor... they tend to portray people they are not. Making Sulu gay because Takei is gay kind of diminishes him as an actor.

I rather them do the Sam Kirk route. Develop lesser known/ never seen but TOS era characters. Janice Rand would be interesting. Joanna McCoy , Carol Marcus, Gary Mitchell, Prime Gearge Kirk. Chief Kyle. Mr. Leslie. Commodore Mendez etc

If the TOS character of Sulu was explicitly hetero this might have weight to it, but really him being gay or bi makes no difference to what we see in TOS or the movies.

Well put.

True, as far as the lore goes, Sulu's sexuality is irrelevant (which is true for an overwhelming majority of characters just in general).

Although I feel there should be a level of veneration to the original actors and portrayals of these characters... if George Takei, a gay man, suggests that Sulu shouldn't gay... i'm inclined to believe him. Vice versa as well, like how Andrew Robinson suggests he played Garak as gay... ok, i'm inclined to go with the actor.

It's not particularly important either way.

Can we have Ash Tyler on this show instead of Sulu? I still wish SNW had taken some of the stories left over from Discovery and ran with them.

I do think that SNW, while being a spinoff of DSC, is really meant to go its own direction and do its own thing. However, there are still a few things that could show up from Discovery. I wouldn't mind doing at least a Klingon episode, kinda see what's going on over there. I wouldn't mind a Harry Mudd appearance, either.

Definitely my preference.

I thought it was ok, if grudgingly, with Kirk. But now it's becoming "Where's Waldo?" Star Trek version, like we had with Picard.

That's my issue pretty much. This was sold as the story before Kirk took over, so basically Pike, Spock, and Una's story. Adding Kirk just basically opened up the can of worms to just add the other characters, like we saw from Scotty in the Season 2 finale. I thought the guy they got as Scotty was great, but I don't want to see Scotty in this series. I want to see Pike.

I think if they can get Wilson back as Mudd, they should definitely do a Mudd story. While this series has shown Klingons in the past, bringing back Mary Cheffo would also be great. I understand SNW is meant to stand on it's own, but it was launched in the same universe as Discovery, so bringing in some of that which Discovery left behind is possible.

Yeah. I do get some hesitance though. SNW has seemingly managed to cut through most of the fan issues and generally appears to be liked across the board. Discovery has been somewhat controversial... I can see why they might choose not to "rock the boat" too much and kind of leave Discovery in the past for the most part.

Harry Mudd transcends, and despite the specific presentation being from Discovery, he's still general enough to work. I think Ash could work... bringing in L'Rell might be dicey.

EDIT -

They won't do it, but I would love to see them bring in Ash to tie in with a (re)introduction of smooth head Klingons. There's a number of ways to go about it, but I can see those who are still affected by the augment virus look at Ash a leader because... he's way up the chain of command and he looks like them, even if it came through a different means. Given that the changes weren't just purely cosmetic, but also altered their brains and such too, Ash is able to connect with them, still having alot of Ash Tyler in there, AS WELL as having sympathy for the misfits from having Voq in there.

Beyond just wanting to see them for lore reasons, I think a good story could be crafted from that. Establish that the smoothhead Klingons are considered worthless freaks, largely shunned by the rest of Klingon society. Ash utilizes them to strengthen L'Rell's position even more... the previous Chancellor's had basically thrown them away as trash. L'Rell, via Ash, harnesses them into an army and they essentially become her primary vanguard.
