Fifth Season is Final Season

Just found out about this.

I have only one thing to say to the executives at Paramount who made this decision.

Indeed, generally folks in power like to push ego and 'make a name' by getting a show cancelled because it's 'not their thing'. Firefly, ToS, etc.

Limited minds cannot accept ideas, statements, or thoughts outside their narrow dogma....often Trek falls into that.

Similar to Futurama it may come back one day, but unlikely under current Paramount execs.

Again, feel bad for fans, but my personal feeling is that I'm not surprised. Other than the final episodes of each season I was often bored by the over referential episodes. Didn't find it funny. It did have some absolutely fantastic episodes of Star Trek but it never capitalised on what actually worked. Shame. Pumping vast amounts of money into series like this and Discovery is what has led to Paramount's current position.

I always saw it as a mixed bag of ups and downs but I enjoyed especially seasons 2 and 4. There was/is still some potential buuuut... This might make a way for some other and possibly better comedy in the future!

Or scare producers away from it because they can't do it right.

Then we will be forcibly brought back to the same old stuffy and self-important finger-wagging and lecturing towards ostensibly "lesser species". I'm sick of that uninspired dreck and it can stay dead with the 90's.

Orville S1 (and only S1) proved comedy in a science fiction wrapper could be done successfully. DSC proved an attempt could be made to copy it not long after, and not quite hit the mark.

I doubt it had anything to do with what the Execs like only because it's ending at the same season Discovery is.

drama spin off of the least popular Trek show.
If it was their least popular, I doubt they'd be making a spin off from it.

All the more reason to support Star Trek: Prodigy when Season Two arrives on Netflix. If animated Trek does well enough on their platform, they may bring it over as well.
Honestly, I have a suspicion Netflix has already made the decision not to renew Prodigy for any further seasons, given S2 is all complete and available in France, but Netflix is making no moves to release it themselves.

Besides, the only reason Netflix stepped in with Prodigy is because the season was something like 85% done when Paramount+ pulled the plug and decided not to run it themselves. I'm not sure how much of Lower Decks is complete, but given Paramount+ still plans on running it, this is not a comparable situation at all to Prodigy at all.

Most of our new Trek shows are ending. :( I understand the financial concerns for the studio, but it's not fun as a fan.

The only benefit is that I only subscribe to P+ for Trek, and if they're only going to have two shows moving forward, that should be a lot fewer months where I need to subscribe.

I wanted to see what they'd do for the season 14 poster once they ran out of movies. Oh, well.

I really wanted them to at least get to season 6... the set will seem incomplete without the TUC-inspired one. :(

I think 10 is the perfect number.. 20 is too much.

Since it's only a half-hour show, 20 would be approximately the same amount of content you're getting in a season of SNW. Is that too much?

I'm not advocating for a return of the 22-26 episode seasons, but generally I tend to prefer somewhere around 12 to 15.

At least it's not 8 like some shows, though.

Why would Netflix’s release date be influenced by what a single region of France does? Netflix most likely would want to release it when their algorithm and schedule will give it the most views and allow time for promotion. A French dub in a geolocked territory is likely negligible in their schemes.

As for renewal, their policy has been to wait for the latest season to air to analyze data before ordering more. That’s what happened most recently with Blue Eye Samurai.

I stand by my original assertion that if we want more Lower Decks to be picked up by another network, Star Trek doing well on Netflix is a good bet.

The longer it's available legally in another country, the more chance there is of the audience illegally watching that version, which takes potential viewers away from Netflix. And besides, spoilers are out there now, so even if people don't illegally watch the French dubs, they don't have to legally watch it to know what happens, they just need to find a legal synopsis written somewhere. Netflix hurts themselves the longer they go without releasing Prodigy.

Even if that is the case, they could at least begin that promotion by releasing a trailer. They haven't even done that much.

I’m not aware of anyone who has decided not to watch a show they were at least interested in due to plot details being revealed. My guess is that it is not material in the grand scheme of things, and may actually help publicity, paradoxically.

Marketing for TV tends to happen in the month or two leading up to wide release. I doubt we will get a trailer before then.

At least we don't seem likely to run up against a 2005 situation again in the next few years! Strange New Worlds keeps on keeping on; Starfleet Academy either does well or it doesn't, but either way, it's around for at least a year. That's bare minimum through like 2026!

So SNW will end with S5 then... it appears that S5 is the new S7. Pity, LD could have gone on for years.. They're obviously running the clock towards having one live show and maybe some TV movies (S31 success pending) as the new model. SNW S5 might debut the same year as Academy for some crossover of airings... but it really does feel like Academy is gonna be it in terms of full season content (at least for now..). If I had to guess the schedule might be:

Disco S5 (current)
S31 movie

SNW S4
LD S5

SFA S1
SNW S5

Then from then on....

SFA S2
+ as yet untitled TV movie each year?

... if that is even vaguely right, they're sure putting a lot of faith in SFA to carry the "regular ST on weekly TV" can... unless of course they have a big announcement about something else "ST on TV"'ish they're keeping back.

We don’t know that. The only thing that seems to be certain in regards to Strange New Worlds right now is that it will have a third and then fourth season.

You’re off on Strange New Worlds. The next season (airing in 2025, I believe) will be its third, not its fourth.

You know, I think I need more coffee today... I'm a season ahead aren't I on SNW! Ooops

Still, I think its fair to suggest a pattern seems to be emerging that S5 is it for modern ST shows... at least for now, with either the financial situation at P+, the actors contracts, or a combination of all of the above. The ultimate path seems to suggest one show plus a movie seems to be the only "new" content that will be coming forward..

Same, to be honest. For what it’s worth, I hope you’re right and we’ll be getting a fifth season of Strange New Worlds. The way it’s going right now it really seems like it’s not totally unlikely they might end it after four seasons. :(

The Trek Gods giveth and the Trek Gods Taketh away :( Great news about SNW terrible news about LD.

It's weird to think that I watched the first 4 or 5 episodes of Lower Decks and wasn't sold, yet now I'd probably class it as my third favourite Trek show. Doesn't seem like there's any chance of someone else picking it up either.

Here's hoping they go out on a high.
