"Star Trek Begins" - The 'Origins' Film Discussion

I would love for this to be a page 1 reboot. Start fresh from scratch. Ignore all continuity that came before hand and start anew. I mean look at the many iterations of Batman and Superman. Let this be a fresh fresh start.

I mean.... it's gotta be the Romulan War/Birth of the Federation. What else could it be?

They're not gonna make a buddy film about Kirk and Spock meeting as kids.

They're not gonna do the rather dull period between First Contact and Enterprise.

They want to do the "Birth of Star Trek." The only logical thing they could do is The Romulan War and the Birth of the Federation, if only because it lends itself to action and adventure. Plus, it's both a Kelvin prequel film, AND a prime timeline prequel. They get to have their cake and eat it too.

I'm not saying this is a good idea, but I honestly don't see what else it could be.

Anything before Nero crossing over in '09 is part of the Prime Timeline, so if this movie is set before Nero's crossover, then this movie will technically be set in the Prime Timeline.

Unless you/the writers follow Simon Pegg's opinion that time travel creates ripples in both directions.

Who is this even for?
Star Trek/Sci-Fi action fans? Who else would it be?

Definitely a strong possibility. As Star Trek fans, that's the natural conclusion to jump to, but it might not be how a studio exec who ultimately greenlights these things might think. I'm half expecting any number of odd, unoriginal, canon destroying or just plain silly ideas that could be greenlit. I'd love a Romulan War/Birth of the Federation movie though!

I'm wondering how they even do something like this on a theatrical level.
Go thru the entire Romulan war in one film?
Do you use the NX-01? Do you bring back the Enterprise cast? Would they trust a theatrical release headlined by Scott Bakula?
If you don't, you'd have to not use the Enterprise, right? Would Paramount make a theatrical film without any version of the Enterprise?
I don't see an easy way to make a theatrical Romulan War /Birth of the Federation movie that would both please longtime fans AND get a green light from profit- conscious executives

I think if they kept the budget modest, $120-$150, they could make a profit just by catering to hard-core and casual Trek fans. But no one seems to want to make a film for that price anymore.

I guess yet another way to do it might be—

“Welp, here we are, about to start the UFP.”
“Not so fast! I, the villain, have taken this Very Important Thing you need to start the UFP! Without it your dreams are DOOMED FOREVER!”
“Quick! After him!”
(Two hours of investigation, chasing and starship action later)
“Whew, that was close! OK, well… here we are, about to start the UFP!”
Dun da DUNNN….. The End.

Michelle Paradise has already submitted a spec script

I'm hoping that that is going to change, and not just for Star Trek, but generally. I mean, they can't keep making 400 million dollar bets on superhero films that keep losing money, right?

I mean, he's right, it does create ripples in both directions, the moment you miss a future time travel indecent that was "supposed" to change the past. I suppose if this movie conflicts with the Prime timeline enough, we could use that the shunt it into Kelvin totally.

I'm really curious what type of story they'll come up with and what characters will be part of the story and I wish it was about the Enterprise characters. But that probably won't happen but since it's supposed to be about the begining of the Federation you think they'd be at least mentioned once in a movie.

Star Trek Beyond had an NX-like ship (Franklin), a mention of MACOs & Xindi, and an NX-shuttlepod, so it's not inconceivable that they would throw an Enterprise reference into a movie, if the plot allowed. But I agree that it's difficult to see how they could bring the cast back. They don't have the cultural traction of the 90s era crews, and also Jolene Blalock has entirely moved on from the Star Trek world.
But a character like Krall/Edison does show that you can have stories in parallel to Enterprise and still put together a big action film if that's the way they want to go. A Romulan War film from a MACO perspective could be an interesting take.
I'd love to know just what they mean by Star Trek origins, we're probably way off base haha.

Remember when they used to make Star Trek movies with characters from that television show you'd grown fond of? Then they'd do another one set after the previous, but then that one kinda sucked.

Then, they'd do another one (same characters; set after the previous) and that ended up being good!

Simpler times.

Guys, I’ve already seen the script! It ends on a cliffhanger as little Jonathan Archer’s eyes go wide in amazement, and we zoom in tight on what may or may not be be the rump of a baby gazelle, jiggling as the majestic creature takes flight. Instead of “Space the final etc. etc.”, the gazelle speech plays over the end credits.

Apparently they’ve retconned it so Archer is only 12, so as to attract the tween demographic. Timothee Chalamet is set to star.

I don't remember Wrath of Khan or First Contact sucking. Very odd!
