"Star Trek Begins" - The 'Origins' Film Discussion

Wonder what they are looking for, since BEY was not an incompetently made film. For that matter, neither was Into Darkness.

I didn't say they were incompetently made. I said that the reason why we haven't gotten any more films since then is because of the incompetence of Paramount.

If that’s what’s holding them back, then we are never seeing another Star Trek film again.

Once Skydance acquires Paramount Global, I'd bet good money that they will actually start production on a film.

My initial reactions to this are:

1. Yawn
2. More prequel bullshit
3. I'll believe it when I'm in the theater watching it

As always, though, I reserve judgment until I see it...it might end up being great if it isn't total vaporware....

Difficult to say whether this is good or bad at this stage. The story of the next Star Trek movie since Beyond has been only marginally less convoluted than DC's attempts to make The Flash movie. That in itself is enough to give me pause.

That being said, assuming this thing actually gets off the ground, any film/series set from First Contact up to TOS will have my attention. There's a lot of unexplored ground there, from very earliest interstellar missions (something I would find very very cool, but sadly unlikely to be what they ultimately make), or a Romulan War/Founding of the Federation scenario, to George Kirk (my least favorite possibility, but could still be fun in a Kelvin Action Movie way). It could also be something entirely different and new. Either way, I'll be keeping an eye on this, there's potential here.

I really, really, really don’t want a so-called Star Trek origin story to be a war movie.

But I’m also at a loss as to what a Star Trek origin story would be.
Star Trek Begins
? We got that in First Contact.
The Federation Begins? We got that in Enterprise.
Kirk (Etc.) Begins? We got (a version of) that in Star Trek ‘09.

What’s left? Maybe Earth Unites, but a movie without starships won’t much feel like Star Trek, and anyway it’s the sort of thing only deep-cut fans would care about.

Maaaaybe a Starfleet Begins movie, just reveling in building and launching the Federation’s grand star navy for the first time, and conflicting over what it’ll be about? Starting the “military or not?” thing, in-universe?

What if it just the Strange New World movie version where Pike turn the Enterprise to Kirk?

…you know, that would be the simplest solution…

Except they’ve said it’s a a Kelvinverse origins story, and in the Kelvinverse we already saw how Kirk got command. So very close, but probably no cigar.

I'm not sure how there's a Kelvinverse origin movie that does anything other than A. What we already saw in Star Trek 2009 or B. isn't set in the Kelvinverse and is just about the Romulan Supernova. I'd actually be interested in seeing a film cover the events of the latter, but the lack of Leonard Nimoy and Patrick Stewart's age makes that seem somewhat unlikely.

I'm probably going out on a limb here, but if it's using the Kelvinverse cast, they would have to recast George Kirk and Pike if those characters need to be depicted. They could use the Main cast but there would have to be time-travel hijinks, so that they could explain their present ages, but be present at whatever origin point the movie is set in. It would probably have to be another 'bad guy screws with the past, to change the present' plot, which I'm less excited about, since it's an overused trope at this point.

Hopefully it's something entirely new or unexpected!

They might call it a Kelvinverse origin story as shorthand, but that's just because the reality is just a little too complicated to explain in a sentence to a non-trekkie audience. Which is that, due to time travel, it's a prequel to both The Kelvin and the Prime timeline, but the production company has direct ties to the Kelvin movies.

I see the logic there, but if I wanted to explain to general audiences the setting of an origin film, I'd probably say that it's set before Kirk's time, because that's what people remember. I've got colleagues who only vaguely remember the Kelvin movies as 'that Chris Pine one'. Maybe this press release is designed for people with a bit more in-depth knowledge though, which is why they use the Kelvin terminology. General audiences won't care one way or another until a trailer comes out.

This is actually on course! Pre-prod is happening, design will start soon.

New toys to play with. We need fresh things.
