Marvel Animation’s X-Men ‘97 Discussion Thread.

Incredibly powerful, game-changing episode, with some really beautiful dialogue writing. Nearly 35 minutes long.

It occurred to me today that I miss the character themes. The original show's music had a distinct leitmotif for each character, and for things like the Sentinels, but the new show doesn't use any of the old themes except the main title.

And this is the middle of the season...:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

If they were determined to remind everyone - or explain to younger generations - why X-Men was THE comic book of the 80's-90's, mission already accomplished and then some. The bar has now been set so ridiculously high for the live-action MCU version that I truly don't know how they can even come close. And the parallel to current real-world events... well, no politics here, but IYKYK. (And speaking of knowing, we still don't even know why the showrunner got fired. For putting himself in this episode as a cameo?!?)

That brief interaction between
Cable and Maddie
was beautiful, not going to lie.

Who? There were so many cameos, I know I missed a lot.

The Watcher is visible in the sky (he's kind of sketched out by the star field) just before everything goes to hell. I saw it first run, but then thought I was imagining things. But I watched again and it's definitely there.

Well, Cable has his work cut out for him to fix all of this.
Amazing episode, though!
But would they fix it? The emotional weight behind it all. I think some might feel cheated. I dunno, the reaction is so strong from people on this.

Yep. When I saw it I knew something big was about to go down.

I don't think anything's going to be "fixed" in that way. Not this time.

Cable appeared for a moment then disappeared almost immediately. He's a time traveler trying to fix something.
Call it fixed, call it altering the timeline, call it whatever you want. The main characters aren't staying dead. Quote me on this when it's all over. (Even if I'm wrong. But I'm not. :D)

This whole episode was about taking advantage of the freedom to do things on Disney+ that FOX Kids would never have let them get away with in the '90s. I find it hard to believe they'd be so bold about everything else yet so timid and conventional as to strip away the power of what we just saw by hitting a reset button.

After all, if Cable could undo it with time travel, surely he would have already. I think the whole point of that scene was that he tried to undo it but failed. Maybe it's a "fixed point in time."

Besides...
The Genoshan genocide is a major, major part of comics continuity going back to 2001. It changed the game for the X-Men going forward in a number of important ways. It's the storyline that introduced Cassandra Nova, who I gather is expected to make an appearance in the show. And the show's portrayal of Genosha also drew on the "Krakoa Era" that's defined the X-Men comics for the past five years.

So I really don't think this is going to be one more cliched "fix it with time travel" disaster. This is meant to be a permanent game-changer. Granted, it's quite possible Magneto will come back to life, since his apparent death and resurrection was part of the New X-Men story arc that inspired this. But I hope they don't undo Gambit's sacrifice. (Though admittedly I never liked Gambit and would prefer him to be gone for good.)

Maybe it's seeing them die in the comics every other issue. And especially with having just "killed" Professor X, killing Magneto so soon after seems like that won't stick either.

The original show "killed" Professor X 27 years ago. This is a new show, from new creators, on a new outlet with far fewer strictures. I mean, if this very episode didn't drive home that all bets are off now, nothing could.

Yes, but it's called "X-Men 97". Professor X died last season, not 27 years ago. "Previously on..." and all that.
And again, no bets are off when you have Bishop and Cable as part of the main story. Their whole point is to travel through time and change things. And Cable's story is just starting here.
