Ok, yeah, agreed. Berman's reasons were mostly different and didn't stem from Gene's. But I'm sure the end result was an agreement on the issue of not recreating TOS!
No, I'm sure Berman had his own reasons but he also took stewardship of the "Roddenberry box" and took that responsibility seriously, keeping it status quo as much as possible.

Berman was pretty anti-TOS to be honest. The writers pushed for TOS stuff but Berman himself wanted to distance his shows, particularly TNG, from it. He really wasn't involved in DS9 for Trials and Tribulations. You can thank Ira and company for that one.

They (Berman abd Gene) wanted TNG to stand on its own. It wa a good choice. It wasn't be a use they were ant TOS. Plus TNG took place further in the future. STD and SNW started just a few years before TOS. STD seemed like a totally different world so thankfully they shunted then to the far flung future. SNW is only about 7 years from TOS now.

No, Berman was truly anti-TOS.

And for the love of god, please stop using STD. It's childish. I'm not the biggest supporter of Discovery, but referring to it that way just makes you look bad. But I digress . . .

I love how Gene wanting his next show to stand on its own is considered a mark of honor but new shows need callbacks. Curious.

Discovery never has any filler. The old shows did though.

DISCO never has filler? :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

Most of the middle of DISCO season 4 was filler. The reason why it's so egregious on DISCO instead of the older shows is because the entire season is one story arc.

At least with the older shows, if there was a 'filler' episode you didn't like, you can skip it without it being issue for the rest of the season. With DISCO, because each episode has so much connective tissue between them, you can't skip anything, includimg the fillers... and that drags the whole thing down.

Besides... there are many 'filler' episodes that are fun. (Different people have different definitions of what constitutes a 'filler' episode. I think of it as one that doesn't move any main arcs or character stories forward. Some examples: "BRIDE OF CHAOTICA!", "SHATTERED", "TAKE ME OUT TO THE HOLOSUITE".) DISCO desperately needed some fun injected into the show.

TNG was absolutely replete with callbacks and references though? The pilot has a cameo by a TOS character and the second episode is a sequel/remake of a TOS episode. It calmed down after that a bit but there were more in the 7 seasons…

Janeway and Picard usually only left the ship in diplomatic capacity, or (Janeway more often) when the situation was supposed to be "safe" (and only later turned dangerous).
maybe. But Janeway was always running off to help out in Engineering, Astrometrics, etc… at least early on.

I feel like Sisko played desk jockey more than any other captain, but that might only have been because whenever there was an episode focused on another cast member (like say a Ferengi episode) he kinda just popped in to glower at someone over his desk for three minutes.

Sisko is a bit different from the others as he commanded both a station and a ship. He only truly becomes a desk jockey in early S6 when Ross makes him his adjutant and gives command of the Defiant to Dax.

No they're not. SNW is a love letter to TOS.
Outside of "Trials and Tribble-ations" and "In A Mirror Darkly") (two gimmick episodes) when did Berman Trek ever "honor" TOS? They used the models and uniforms from the films as a matter of budget and practicality. I don't recall them doing the same for TOS.

Exactly. It had everything to do with saving money, not honoring anything. DS9 was a gimmick episode, honoring an anniversary. They did not speak of it ever again.

I’ve always hated this idea that an episode like “Trials…” or even “Relics” don’t count because they were fan service to TOS. There were plenty of episodes that were never mentioned again.

They count fine. I became a fan of DS9 because of it. Just, it's not a trend setter either. It counts like any other episode.

McCoy isn't even referred to by name in the pilot, more than likely a way to get around any character use payments so Roddenberry could avoid losing more royalties.

According to the interviews on the TNG blu-rays, the anti-TOS feeling was so stringent in the early days, Ira Steven Behr had to fight to even get one mention of the name Spock into the episode "Sarek." I bet that Sarek himself was more easily used because "Journey to Babel" was credited to D.C. Fontana and not Roddenberry.

His personal philosophy had evolved and he regarded original Trek as not a complete vision. Hence The Motion Picture being markedly different from the series, and The Next Generation more so.
Yes. Pretty much why I think TOS and Roddenberry Trek overlap, but when people say "Roddenberry Trek", they really mean TMP and the first two seasons of TNG. Including myself.

There's no more network interference from NBC, and The Vision is fully developed, so -- in theory -- those are the purest versions of Roddenberry Trek.

He doesn't care about that. We'll just have to ride this out. See you in five or 10 pages.

Discovery never has any filler. The old shows did though.

Filler is when there are long discussions about things that have nothing to do with the episode. The old shows had one hour or two to tell a story not 10. Discovery has one adventure per 10 episodes so we get the characters going on side discussions about relationships with their boyfriends or girlfriends etc. It slows down the story. It's Ike a super long movie with bad editing.

You mean character development, subtext, etc? Got it.

Also anyone think they should have had the three having masks when they were speeding unprotected through the sandy desert? They must have cut the scene where they were coughing up stand for the next few hours.
