"Bridge crew" doesn't have to mean main characters. No real reason to expect it should.
Like I said, it just doesn't work as well for me. Obviously, YMMV. Too me just seems weird to fill the bridge, the control center of the ship, with essentially background characters. It does seem like they should be main characters.

What would make it necessary?
If the information that Dr. Kovich wasn't revealing to Burnham actually would increase the danger if she knew. I don't see that her knowing about the progenitors and the Romulan doctor increases the danger.

I suppose there could be more to it that we'll find out. I've only seen the first episode. But when it was revealed, I wasn't like, oh yeah, I can see why he didn't want that getting out because that information itself increases the danger.

But, like I said, didn't reduce my enjoyment, just made me shrug. I suppose bureaucracy and all hasn't changed by the 32nd century!

Kovich found it dangerous. Tis sufficient for the first episode.

That's what they were in TOS. The movies somehow "elevated" them and the subsequent shows followed suit. And frankly most of the actors were poorly served by being stuck in those parts.

Different strokes for different folks. Glad it works for you. Being a matter of opinion, there's no correct answer to this.
Indeed.

Also just an interesting divergence point of opinion. I mean, I want more of Stiles so should TOS have had more of him?

No not really. Definitely knew them in TOS. But that's neither here nor there for Discovery.

Like I said, this is just a matter of opinion so yours is no more correct than mine. I'm glad you like how Discovery is doing things. However, I'd prefer to know the bridge characters more.

Stiles was a one off so not really comparable. But, yes, if that's your opinion, it's certainly valid to be interested in more Stiles. Why wouldn't it be?

It actually makes no sense for a vessel of hundreds of crewmen to have all the most important officers on the bridge simultaneously. In real navies, those are NCOs and sailors. It's Star Trek that makes the inverse seem to be the norm.

It's enough for a bureaucracy. But not satisfying in a more meaningful sense.
It's the first episode. If I want meaning I'll wait until episode 10.

Because he's not a main.

Its drama. The day to day in real navies is too boring.

Because Vance agrees with her.
indeed, and this is an interesting issue with 32nd century Starfleet: Vance seems to pretty much own it, having extreme discretion and not answering pretty much to anyone, with the possible (but usually not very present) president and now to Kovich, who can give him missions but doesn’t seem to have direct authority over him and whose position was never really clear.

I just thought it was lame that Dr. Kovich felt the need to keep it a secret. It really wasn't necessary because it didn't reveal much more. You already knew it was something really dangerous. The reveal about the progenitors and the Romulan doctor doesn't reveal any more than that. Just confirms that the Romulan guy also thought it was very dangerous.
yes, mystery for the sake of mystery.

You're overthinking this. The information he didn't want to reveal just wasn't dangerous for Burnham to know.

Him keeping it a secret did not detract from the episode, at least not for me. I'm sure it was just the writers amping up the mysteriousness and using it to create the Tilly & Vance scene.

Because he's not a main.
But your opinion that you'd like to see more of Stiles is still valid. There's no objectively correct answer to whether there should be more Stiles or not. It's just an opinion after all.

Agreed. Mains are to be developed.

Not automatically given to the Bridge crew. Nowadays, Bailey would be roundly criticized for leaving after only one episode. He needs more, after all for his sacrifice to matter.

Or, so it seems to me.

I don't know that.

Discovery's bridge crew is rather boring ... but somehow they are all officers.
Officers are not promoted on charisma.
