I think so.
So would it be a good show if it was open ended, existing in its own timeline?

Could be. But I feel I wouldn't care about the characters as much.So it wouldn't be a good show if it was open ended, existing in its own timeline?
I genuinely like the Kelvin films, but I don't really care that much for the characters. Yes, they're Kirk and Spock, etc. But they're NOT Kirk and Spock.
That is the whole point, we’re supposed to be better, we’re learning. Guinan,in “Q, Who?”, said that we might be able to understand and negotiate with the Borg, someday. We made “peace” with the Klingons. That is the whole underpinnings of Trek.
Giving us something savage and cruel, just for the sake of it being savage and cruel, is really a slap in the face.
You know, my head canon says that the Gorn Kirk fights in Arena is actually the Gorn equivalent of Joe Biden or something, which explains why he's so slow and ponderous. Makes me chuckle to think of Kirk getting all proud of himself for beating up a Gorn senior citizen
Were they? I didn't. I was fascinated by the culture presented. When they introduced the Klingons, the audience was supposed to go, "oooohh, Klingons!!!".
Yes. And while I appreciate the work of those books, I find treating them as strict rulebooks is frustrating.I blame the Star Trek Chronology and Star Trek Encyclopedia. Everyone took it as absolute gospel when the Chronology even had a disclaimer saying it was intended as a fun guide and not an absolute. A generation of fans grew up obsessing over those books like they were the holy writ.
Damn straight.Because Strange New Worlds does nothing but improve the characters of TOS.
I will agree to a certain point. I love the Kelvin films because that Kirk is someone a bit different than what I know he could be. I don't think to loose that connection is a detriment, but it is definitely an enjoyable topping to an incredible show.Could be. But I feel I wouldn't care about the characters as much.

One of the best things about SNW is the expansion of the characters I fell in love with as a kid. To lose that connection, would be a detriment to the show.
In my opinion.
Did we really need to inject politics into this?![]()
Uh...I just picked someone current and well known who seems old and frail. No political message intended.Did we really need to inject politics into this?![]()

They'll become something like their TOS counterparts. SNW's continuity is somewhat flexible. You can tell by the way the Enterprise looks it's not 1:1, it's "in continuity" with a nod and a wink. And they even used the Temporal Wars as a vague excuse for the differences, should one want it... then had the Lower Decks guys crossover and not notice anything odd at all, if you want to imagine it all fits perfectly. The difference between the Kelvin timeline characters and the SNW characters is that the former aren’t going to become the characters they were portrayed as in TOS, and the latter ones will, if it’s all the same universe. That’s the issue I have. Because I don’t want SNW Chapel to become TOS Chapel, or SNW T’Pring to become TOS T’Pring. If they don’t want to acknowledge that the Discoverse is a reboot, then say it’s a changed timeline and do more with these characters than to just say ‘wanna know where they’ll all end up? Watch the Original Series!’ I’d rather they continue to take them in new directions instead of shoehorning them into an outdated ‘60’s continuity.
I wish they'd gone with a full reboot, but it is what it is. The last episode will probably have a "refit" and a quick scene where Kirk, on the TOS Set Tour bridge ordering them out of spacedock, to keep the Picard Season 3 crowd happy.
I'd rather see them become their TOS counterparts. It's, to borrow phrase, fascinating.

Ok. I can.I for one can’t wait to see Celia Rose Gooding with a beehive hairdo. And Paul Wesley with his arm seductively around a 19 year old girl, and banging a Roman slave.
What? Please the fans? That would be the dumbest thing they could do.

I don't believe Uhura ever had a beehive.
And your disparagement of her character undercuts the enormous importance she had even being there.
Pleasing some fans. To quote Emperor Kuzco, "And that's...bad?"Not ‘the fans.’ It would please a small segment of fans who are under the impression that things will eventually look like TOS. Becuase most fans of SNW aren’t expecting that to happen.
