Marvel Animation’s X-Men ‘97 Discussion Thread.

On practically the eve of the premiere… this is not a good look, to say the least. :wtf: What the hell did he do?!?

I didn't realize he had that kind of history, sounds like he must have been doing that again with X-Men '97.

Apparently Disney sent DeMayo his flowers

Brad Winderbaum, an executive producer on “X-Men ’97” and Marvel Studios’ head of streaming, television and animation, has released a statement after showrunner Beau DeMayo‘s shocking firing on Tuesday.

“He did excellent work writing Seasons 1 and 2, and I can’t wait for fans to see the series,” Winderbaum said. “The entire team came together to create a revival worthy of the X-Men’s 60-year legacy. From Stan and Jack, to Claremont, to the Lewalds, we all truly were standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Amidst all the speculation about his departure, Marvel Animation heads are now spinning that their parting with DeMayo was more amicable than previously reported, and are more complimentary of his contributions.

Never really thought about it while watching the show (or maybe I did and don't remember)... but shouldn't Sinister have some kind of British accent?

Sinister's origin wasn't revealed in the comics until 1996, so the makers of the show in 1992 had no way of knowing he'd turn out to be of British origin when they cast his voice actor (whose name, ironically, is Christopher Britton). They did eventually use his comics origin in their penultimate episode in 1997, though.

It can be rationalized, though. A British person who lived in America long enough might lose their accent, and Sinister/Essex is more than a century old. Although it sounded in that clip like he had an American accent already back in Victorian times.

So...

They're trying to retcon in that Rogue and Magneto's on and off thing happened in this continuity too? I've always found that to be a questionable thing...

Wow, this was terrific. The designers and Studio Mir did an amazing job making the show look like it was made in the '90s, but by a quality animation studio on the level of TMS rather than the sloppy, cheap work Akom did on the original show. (And, yeah, with digital ink and paint, but you can't have everything.) The writing was terrific, feeling like a faithful continuation while making some big and potent changes. And the voice work was very satisfying. I was afraid the returning actors' voices would've changed too much after nearly three decades, but aside from George Buza's voice as Beast being a bit higher-pitched, they sound almost the same. Lenore Zann's voice as Rogue is maybe a little rougher at times, but there was always a roughness to it, and it still has that sassy lilt I always found really sexy. And it's great to hear Wolverine sounding like Cal Dodd again. I liked Scott McNeill and Steve Blum well enough in the role, but Dodd is the definitive Logan for me.

As for the new voices, Ray Chase sounds uncannily like Norm Spencer as Cyclops, and A.J. LoCascio is a pretty good match for Chris Potter's Gambit. The others are farther afield, especially Isaac Robinson-Smith, whose Bishop sounds nothing like Philip Akin's. But the rest are at least in the ballpark, and if Catherine Disher's voice has changed too much to play Jean anymore (she's doing Val Cooper now, so you can hear the change), Jennifer Hale is a great choice to succeed her.
