DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

I can't remember what it was, but I was watching something on one of the WB TV channels, and they were advertising the shit out of it.

Well, it had even less marketing than The Flash. I honestly didn't even realize it was out this weekend until a couple days ago when I saw people posting about it here.
Only that I’m on the emailing list for my local cinemas, I would never have realised when it opened here.

That's WB using one-way synergy --- exploiting their TV connections for the sake of the movies, but never going the other way. They did that for one of the the other DCFU movies.... where the TV actors were promoting some movie... i forget which one. I only remember how i felt the actors were being exploited.

It's gonna be really interesting to see how they try to reignite interest in the general public when the universe relaunch happens. We're basically at rock bottom right now, and Superman isn't that far away. If they don't manage to relaunch in a big way, it may be over before it begins.

So looks like Aquaman's four-day opening (including Christmas Day) will be worse than The Marvels three-day opening.

I was about to ask what the Plan B will be if Superman goes the same way as all these movies but then remembered they're already on Plan B.

If Gunn's film underperforms or is a flop, the logical move would be to place WB's superhero movies on hold (and read the handwriting on the wall in the pop cultural / dollar value sense), since the purpose of this DCU was to reboot their IPs for film, but logic and entertainment companies rarely walk hand-in-hand toward reasonable choices.

The time of the superorc movie has come!

Trying to guess the next fad. We seem pretty topped out on fantasy as well. And westerns had their moment on TV, not compared to the golden age of westerns on TV, but it's possible we might see more western movies/TV shows.

Maybe video game based movies? A couple came out that weren't bad. And there are some shows based on video games.

Maybe the low budget rom com comes back since it's less risky for theatres. Maybe the low budget horror comes back. Both are not that risky for theatre releases.

The low budget horror has been around for a while.

Everyone seems to be dancing on the grave of the superhero genre including the fans. I don't think Gen Z cares about movies at all and the old farts now are too happy watching their TVs at home and their private bathrooms and bitching about that guy with the cell phone the last time they went to the theater.

Seems some movies might be profitable if they could turn them in a lower budget.

In a sense, it would be the history of director/producers such as William Castle, and studios of the AIP variety repeating itself, where their fantasy and/or exploitation cheapies (occasionally with higher production values) made healthy profits while some A-list studios were simultaneously drowning in the muck of over-produced and/or lifeless genres / losing ground & audiences to TV. It will come as no surprise if that happens to the movie industry in this era.

I didn't even realize the new Aquaman movie was coming out this weekend until like Wednesday.

Initial reports have 'Aquaman 2' four day opening at $40.0 million with a three day opening of $28.1 million, a drop of 58.6% from the original opening.

I'm starting to wonder if the era of theatrical movies entirely is coming to an end. Like I've been saying this whole time, this trend isn't just happening with superhero movies, it's happening with all movies. Other than Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and a few other, almost every movie that's come out the last few years has either bombed or at least underperformed. I think a combination of the rising price of movie tickets, the speed these movies are coming to streaming, high quality home surround sound systems, and big HD TVs continuing to get cheaper, is making going to the theater a lot less appealing to people.

I doubt it. Whenever people predict that a certain genre or medium is dying, it ends up still being around the next time they say it's dying a decade later, and then the next time they say it's dying, and the next and the next and the next. People have probably been predicting the end of theatrical movies since television became a thing.

People forget that cultural trends are cyclical. They see the tide going out and assume it means the ocean is drying up forever.
