Spoilers The Controversial Star Wars Opinion Thread

People would have been upset about that as well, but probably less upset. It would have been one thing for GL to circular file the EU when it was his baby to start with. It was quite something else for Disney to do it.

It seems to really add insult to injury to erase the previous sequels just in order to do a similar story anyway.

That one bothered me a lot back in the day and then the fan art of the Legends EU ran with it, with Luke more and more in robes like the PT Jedi. Even in AOTC, the waitress droid goes "Jedi by the looks of him." The robes were a dead give away. Irritating.

In the script of ROTJ, I think, it says that Luke is dressed in the uniform of a Jedi Knight. In early PT concepts Obi-Wan's character (Qui-Gon wasn't there yet) is dressed in black, and looks reminiscent of some Javanese inspired outfits.

Really need something else for a Jedi outfit.
When you think about it Tatooine is kind of the perfect place for a Jedi to hide.

"Okay, troops, fan out and report back if you see anyone who looks like a Jedi."

"Sir, pretty much everyone on this planet looks like a Jedi."

"DAMMIT!"

EU stuff aside, was anyone happy with the character treatment that Han, Luke, Leia, and Indy got in their final appearances?
Yes. (though I haven't seen Indy yet, still waiting for it to hit D+)

replace it with her 'Force is female'

The "Force is Female" wasn't a Star Wars thing, it was Nike ad campaign connected to their Force brand which wasn't connected to Star Wars at all.

George never cared about the EU's lore, he never considered it part of his universe, outside of some character designs.

Well, you better head on down to Lucasfilm and explain that to KK, because she definitely didn't get the memo.

Even if it was, it's nothing to get upset about.

I'm not upset, but I have been watching Disney bleed money at unsustainable rates with flop after flop. So someone over there at the house of mouse had better right the ship, or pretty soon there won't be any more SW, Marvel, DC, etc. Unless they sell those franchises, which would make my decade.

The Nike campaign was also used at a film festival that Kennedy and her husband help support.

Ok, and?

Disney keeps hemorrhaging money and we keep getting told that Disney is a horrible evil company that deserves to burn so why is this an issue? At some point in time they have to take enough losses and that might mean that there is less content produced, hopefully that fans stop buying if they actually don't like it and show that they don't like it and hit Disney were it actually hurts, rather than simply saying "I don't like this."

Because that isn't stopping them. They are making the content they want, and fans keep buying it and then bitching afterwards all while claiming this time Kennedy is actually finished.

And... nothing? I made my point.

You are half-right. People aren't buying it, hence the disastrous box office numbers and multiple consecutive flops. I'm not clapping my hands over it like these youtube jerkoffs, just stating the fact. I don't get riled up about this stuff- I just vote with my wallet and get on with the day.

...all while claiming this time Kennedy is actually finished.

I find this a source of endless amusement. If we all had a buck for every time the internet claimed KK has been fired, we could retire to our own private islands. It's like the youtube crowd believes in the 'perception is reality' trope to the point that if they keep screaming it from the rooftops, then some morning they'll wake up and it will be true. In the meantime, Disney is apparently fine with KK and her work.

My controversial take - the only viable and successful theatrical Star Wars film will be a one with a deep-faked young Luke, Han, and Leia.

Hmm. And imagine if they eschewed re-inventing the wheel, and they adapted a popular and critically acclaimed story to do it. Seems like we know a guy who wrote a story like that- his name is Timothy Zahn.

Which is the more interesting part to me. Despite the complaints, these projects keep getting made.

As far as just Star Wars goes, they haven't been all bad. Rogue One was solid, and I thought the Mandalorian was great through the end of Season 2. I thought Andor was awesome, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

As I said in that thread, I tried to love Ahsoka but just don't, the way they've gone with it. The newer animated shows I haven't watched. A couple years ago I was shouting that Disney was crazy not to hand it all over to Favreau and Filoni. Lately I am not so sure. At this point I'm not sure what would be best for the franchise, but Disney selling it would be a good start, in my personal opinion- Disney is currently the fail-train based on falling box office numbers, park attendance, and fan abandonment. People aren't picking up what they're putting down.

I only have a vague recollection of the Zhan trilogy - Thrawn, Mara Jade, clones with extra vowels in their names.

I wouldn't expect it to be a literal adaptation, but sure I could see them using Thrawn and introducing Mara Jade (maybe even making Mara the titular character all the deep fakes revolve around). But hell, if you're deepfaking you could set it somewhere in the original trilogy and get some of the sweet Darth Vader nostalgia too.

A pause would probably be best for the franchise.

They tried one thing. It didn't work. Pausing it will probably a way to step back and regroup. If Disney is hemorrhaging money they are not going to let LFL go for cheap. So, not sure how that's going to work.
and get some of the sweet Darth Vader nostalgia too.
So fucking out.

Vader is the least interesting part of the franchise at this point. Overhyped for ROTS, and eventually just felt like the villain was the hero of the franchise.

I'm good with no more Vader nostalgia.

Even if it was, it's nothing to get upset about.

How dare they advertise to girls???

That's not what it's about. That is a blatant mischaracterization of the man's argument. There's an agenda being pushed here, and many of us are not at all comfortable with it.

Which is the more interesting part to me. Despite the complaints, these projects keep getting made.

Because something is funding it. Disney isn't just forking out all of their own money over these movies. They're being funded by production companies, many of whom have ex-CIA and ex-FBI agents and ex-DoD types sitting on the board. So tired of saying it lately: Wall Street is the CIA, and the CIA is Wall Street. This isn't some big revelation: the CIA has used Disney numerous times to push propaganda.

So let them keep pissing away their money. Eventually, it's gonna run out, and then they'll be forced to sell the franchise, and it will be retconned to meet a new owner's tastes yet again.

Hmm. And imagine if they eschewed re-inventing the wheel, and they adapted a popular and critically acclaimed story to do it. Seems like we know a guy who wrote a story like that- his name is Timothy Zahn.

You, sir, have won the internet.
