Spoilers AHSOKA series [Spoiler Discussion]

I'd suggest Jim Caviezel if he hadn't gone completely nuts.

What's Adrian Paul doing these days?

I don't really get the Shin Hati stuff. So she travels to another galaxy to leave her master and then become leader of a group of rando bandits?
No, she traveled to another galaxy to serve her master and Thrawn. When it became clear they were both done with her, she was kinda stuck. She clearly didn’t trust Ahsoka’s offer of help.

She may try to reconnect with Baylan. She parted from him to serve Thrawn, then realized Thrawn didn’t want her.

While I can't say I didn't enjoy the series I'm mostly left feeling really unsatisfied with it all. It moves too slow for me. The ending, like most of the show feels like a set up for things to come later. Ezra is back, as is Thrawn but there's no real payoff. It's just moving pieces in place. Why not have Thrawn launch a surprise attack and then a certain number of systems once loyal to the Empire align with him. Then the Republic is left on their back foot not knowing how to move forward without plunging the galaxy into war again. Just give me a taste of something before I have to wait 2+ years for an unannounced season 2 or 3-5 years for a movie that may or may not happen.

I do think they went a bit too far with Sabine’s force ability. It looked like she went from 0 to 100. I would have had it that she reaches out for the saber but it only shakes, and then Ezra force pushes it to her. Leave her getting full control later on.

What a spectacularly, hilariously terrible show.

The finale, true to form, was awful. So much stupid.

So, Ahsoka, as the "padawan of Anakin" was so predictable because she....rode in a straight line to try to find Thrawn. And Thrawn, being the stable tactical genius that he is, outsmarted her by...flying away.

Once on board Thrawn's ship, Ezra did literally nothing. No attempt to sabotage anything, just a quiet escape.

And how did Ezra find the Republic fleet, exactly? And why didn't he, I dunno, radio ahead?!? Instead, he shows up in an imperial ship, still wearing stormtrooper armor with helmet on to disembark into a bunch of Republic goons with guns just for a ....dramatic reveal?

And all Baylan does this episode is visit the Old Man in the Mountain and stare into space. Uh, what? Ray Stevenson, you deserved SO much better. Hey, kids, this is why you don't create entire seasons of TV that are just set up for something else. Good god.

This had some of the most comically incompetent action in SW history. The first lightsaber fight against the troopers was astonishingly inept.

And then we get literal zombies. Sigh. But, despite all the heroes being armed with lightsabers, no one thinks to maybe cut off their damn legs? I was screaming at the screen. Cut off the legs! One leg. A foot, even. I guess the show, being a kids' show on Disney, couldn't be too gruesome. But it was just so, so dumb watching them uselessly hack at the troopers' torsos again and again with no effect.

Morgan Elsbeth. Has there ver been a less intimidating, less charismatic villain in the star wars canon? Nope! What a total snooze. Thrawn is only slightly better by default. The vaunted genius who never does antying remotely impressive or smart other than the most obvious thing.

And, of course, when all is said and done, this show was nothing more than a mindless franchise extension and completely pointless 8 episodes of wheel spinning that exist only to set up a future project. It's the most disposable bit of SW content probably ever.

You could easily skip this and go to whatever is next without missing anything remotely important. (and that's not even mentioning how bad the pacing is, how what little story there is in this show could have easily been told in half the episodes.)

Filoni needs to be put out to pasture yesterday. Despite a body of good work on SW in the past, he's now an embarrassment who's dragging down the franchise as a whole.

How sad that the SW franchise as a whole would be in a much better place if 60% of its recent live action content simply didn't exist.

The Acolyte is another one I haven't really been tracking. I know just about zero about it.

Knowing "zero" about an upcoming SW project is the only reason to be interested in it. The last thing we need are more pointless, soulless, creatively bankrupt brand extensions that strip mine the lore because they have no idea what else to do.

While episode eight wasn't boring, a lot of what happened in it made no sense as others have commented.

There was about two episodes-worth of decent material in the eight. The remainder was just dull and duller padding. They didn't even reveal who or what Baylan was going off to find. So, I guess much of a season 2 will be spent wandering around dank and gloomy Peridea in search of a decent plot. I might wait for the whole thing to drop before choosing whether to bother with it.

A complete and utter abomination of a Star Wars show. Why would anyone follow Thrawn after his defeat? The New Republic lets an Imperial shuttle dock on one of it's ships. An important ship by the look of it. And Ezra just happens to pick the one that Hera was on.

WTF is going on with Baylan and Shin? That's just annoying. And with Ray no longer with us, they will most likely change their plans anyway.

Filoni writes like a child. He imagines a cool scene and writes it down without thinking about how it ties with the story. He cares not the least for continuity.

Sabine finally gets to use the Force while being choked out? She can't use while fully concentrating, but can here. And of course, the Force jump and push. Jesus Christ.

And stormtrooper zombies. Just fuck off already Dave.

Fantastic conclusion! Fast paced, tightly edited, and managed to be both a satisfying finale and open ended enough to leave us wanting more!

Random thoughts and notes: -
  • The Blade of Talzin? Uh, how would they even know that name, let alone have her blade? How long have they been there? How old was Talzin anyway!? I think there's more story here yet to be told, but it does support my idea that this lot were banished here relativly recently. Like, as recently as Palpatine's pact with Talzin . . .
  • A C. S. Lewis inspired episode title in a show dripping with Tolkien influence? Very funny Dave.
  • So much for "Mr. I don't need a lightsaber". Still, it's nice to get a direct connection back to Kanan. I don't even mind how contrived it is that Huyang would still just so happen to have a spare emitter shroud for Kanan's sabre.
  • Well that clears the chronology of event up somewhat; The Great Purge was at the end of the war, so presumably between tESB & RotJ (hope someone passed that note to the ongoing comics, since that's right where they are at the moment!)
  • Also we get a clearer idea of why Ahsoka abandoned Sabine the first time; she allowed her fear to dictate her actions, which as we all know is the path to the dark side. That all tracks, especially with the symbolic implications of her visit to the WBW.
  • We still don't know how long they were Master & Padawan, but this at least show it could have been as long as 4 years depending on when they reunited. Doubtless there are storys yet to be told of their exploits juuuuust off screen during the OT. Like say that time they finally made it to Hoth to train with Luke just in time to run right into the backside of the Imperial blockade, missed the fallback rendezvous co-ordinates and spent of of the year trying to link back up with the scattered fleet . . .
  • Damn, they built the T-6's to be tough. That's the second time it's been downed this season!
  • OK, so if that's been Huyang's shuttle since forever, then what about the Crucible? Perhaps the reason Huyang survived this whole time is that he has his own personal temple/workshop/outpost out there somewhere, complet with several ships including the Crucible and some shuttles, and the Empire never found it?
  • So my assumption that Thrawn woke up the witches was correct. Interesting. Still begs the question of how long and why they where there in the first place. I still like to think the fortress was a prison/tomb built by either the Jedi or the Sith a few thousand years back, and Palpatine banished them there somehow as part of his pact with Talzin.
  • It kind of bothers me how in the initial fight with the Night Troopers, Sabine & Ezra's blades seem way to short. As if VFX missed to the note to extend them to their full length and instead kept them in-line with the LED props (which are indeed shorter.) The reason I think this is the case is because later on, they're both back to normal!
  • Sword and Shield manoeuvre!
  • Zombie troopers confirmed! But also confirmed that this hasn't happened to Ezra before, so while it may have been him damaging their armor, resurrections haven't been Thrawn's SOP.
  • Now here's the thing; I've never had any trouble accepting Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine . . . but it's not until the "Lucky Us!" and "What's your excuse?" lines that I could almost swear that was Tiya Sicar's delivery! It's not because Liu Bordizzo hasn't been acting the part until now, it's because Sabine is just now getting back to her old self (similar to what's going on with Ahsoka & Dawson's changed performance.) So I'd call that excellent acting!
  • Let's all just pretend it wouldn't have taken them like an hour to up those stairs, all the way to to the top of that tower, OK? OK.
  • Ah, so I guess some of Thrawn's Deathtroopers survived Ezra's rampage to the bridge back on Lothal *5 minutes later . . . * Gah! Never mind, they were zombies the whole time after all! Kill it with fire!
  • Also: finally they live up to their name AND present a challenge above and beyond the rank & file. Their armour can even stop a blaster shot or two!
  • Destroying the control panel makes the door close? Oh Star Wars, never change!
  • We really are getting spoiled with the quality and presentation of these lightsaber fights! I love that they had the confidence to just hold on a wideshot and show the performers completing a full phrase for the piece without any intercutting.
  • Oh, Sabine Kylo'ed him! Now I'm left wondering if Sabine taught Ben that move . . .
  • I could be wrong, but I think these are new digital assets for the TIEs as they look a lot more like the original miniatures than the ones used in RO, Solo & Mando. I should go back and remind myself if Andor used that one too . . .
  • Did anyone actually think for a second that Sabine jumped off-screen and didn't stay behind to help Ahsoka? No? Me neither.
  • RIP Ahsoka's shoto. (It's fine, even if she didn't grab it in the dash to the ship, she has plenty of time to recover the parts and crystal from the rubble and rebuild it.)
  • Double slash lightsaber/witchblade combi-kill? Ouch.
  • Anyone else notice how Morgan got progressivly paler as the fight went on, until she was almost proper Nightsister alabaster white by the end?
  • Ezra pretending to be an Imperial over the comlink, then disguising himself as a Stormtrooper? How utterly unprecidented! ;)
  • Wait, so what happened to the Blade of Talzin? Ahsoka wasn't carrying it in the runto the ship, and I didn't see it on the floor near Morgan's body . . .maybe it evaporated? Figures.
  • OK, I guess Star Wars is just straight up using the word "ronin" now. I'd prefer something at little bit more uniquly Star Wars, but it's way better than "Grey Jedi" at least. (Yes, I know where the word Jedi came from, but at least it was modified enough to be distinct!)
  • Typical Morai. Showing up at end to be all cryptic and mystical. Go back home and feed Murley! Still weird seeing her looking like an actual barn owl (with a prehencile tail) and not her usual rotund self.
  • So Shin get's to be bandit queen of the space Dothrakki? I doubt we've seen the last of that one.
  • Similarly Baylan's story is not finished yet. I'm still not going to speculate on how LF will preceed with this character's portrayl. It still feels like it's in poor taste. I'm sure they'll decide whatever they'll decide and all the discussion and speculation will turn out to be entierly pointless.
  • A Mortis Argonath? Yes please! As for what's on the horizon: well one does recall that both the Father and Son dwelt in towers topped by mysterious glowy crystal things. Curiously though, we never did see the Daughter's own tower . . . eyrie? (Yes yes, there's this whole thing too.)

  • All I know for sure is that last time we saw someone go where the father pointed, it led to a gateway to voidspace. Also a nice touch how just like Sabine's murial, theses statues seem directly based on their stylised animated incarnations.
  • Speaking of murials; neat little detail how the statues hands are holding the same position as the Lothal Temple's painting, (though the daughters is only barely visible, you can still tell hers' is open palmed vs. the Son's closed fist.)
gQw5VNY.png

  • Crucially the Father is pointing forwards, which on the painting was only when it was in the "open" position.
  • Dathomir? Well, looks like the Nightsister clan is going to be back in business. Let's hope it stays that way! Though I think Merrin might have mixed feelings on the matter . . .
  • Can't get an exact count, but going by a quick tally it looks to be upwards of 5300 "items of cargo". One assumes the deal is to offload all this on Dathomir and then part ways. Next stop Wayland?
  • Ezra is such a little drama queen; there's no good reason why he'd keep that helmet on other than to have a dramatic reveal! Nice symetry with how this whole show started though.
  • Not sure what planet the fleet is orbiting but it's obviously not Coruscant. Lothal woudl make the most sense since where else would Ezra go first?
  • Curious how Sabine sensed Anakin's presence first (or at all!)
  • Well that's a familiar arrangment to close on. Nice that Kiner finally got to use this alt version of it. To where the sun sails and the moon walks indeed.
  • . . . Still no wizard staff for Ahsoka though.
I know I've been saying this since day one but; "limited series" my arse! This is clearly written as a "season 1". Way too may dangling threads specific to this show; Shin & Baylan. Ahsoka & Sabine. Dathomir. Whether a second season was greenlit or not before now remains to be seen, but I wouldn't be surprised if Filloni just took a gamble knowing this could be all he'd get. Given the numbers this show is supposed to have been doing, I wouldn't be shocked if we get an announcement sooner rather than later.

Oh and the next person to mention Abeloth gets the spray bottle! Not happening. Horrible character. Filloni wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Liked it well enough... if this was just wrapping up episode 5 or so out of 10. Too slow of a burn for something advertised as a single limited series, and really no payoff other than to move pieces around for later works to come (future season of Mando, the wrap up movie). Don't feel like it had enough of a through-line on it's own, despite putting a small journey together for Ahsoka around the Master/Apprentice theme.

Honestly feels like a common problem in the streaming era with these 'prestige' shows. Enough material for 2-3 episodes or a 2 hour movie, and instead it's 1 or more seasons of 10-ish episodes. Many of which could have been 2 minutes in another episode, or dialog completely. Era of infinite money for streaming shows is coming to a close, so maybe that will help tighten things back up?

As I feared. All set up for other shows/movies. I did like what I saw but I think they should have had a 12-episode series that had a conclusion to the arc with threads that could be used for the movie.

How sad that the SW franchise as a whole would be in a much better place if 60% of its recent live action content simply didn't exist.
It's not.

Not sad at all.

I disregard 90% of the books and SW content. People have made the SW content too preeminent when it was always a mixed bag. And trivia knowledge became more important than quality.

I'm over it. The Disney bashing is as tiresome as the "Lucas raped my childhood " arguments 20 years ago.

You want to send a message? Stop buying.

If you've never seen an episode of animated SW before watching this show, it gets a 2/10. The viewer will be completely lost, and worse still, completely un-invested. The show assumes that you know who ALL these characters are, and their backstory. If you don't, well, the writers ain't got time for you, despite the glacial pacing.

If you've seen TCW and Rebels, it gets about an honest 5/10. Good visuals and some good action sequences spliced into a boring, glacially slow storyline. The return of Thrawn should have been the stuff of epic greatness. Instead, Filoni ran with the absolute worst space-horror elements of his animated shows. We get Dathomiri witches, space zombies, a revisit of the Mortis storyline, WBW Anakin fanwank, space whales, and turtle-hobbits. All in a 'different galaxy' which is a nothing but an even more barren, boring planet of the regular SW galaxy.

Couple other points in summation:

Some aspects of animated shows don't necessarily translate well to live action.

For purposes of this series, Baylan and Shin ended up a B-plot sideline that went nowhere.

Hera and Thrawn were total miscasts. Yes, I said it: Lars sucked as live-action Thrawn. People are in love with his voice. Well, that's obviously not everything. Someone like Jason Isaacs would have brought some genuine menace to the role.

I can't decide yet if Rosario Dawson is a miscast or not, but she is wooden as hell as live-action Ahsoka Tano.

The less said about MEW here, the better. I saw a clip from Galaxy's Edge where some rando Disney employee was playing Hera. She looked more like her, with better looking makeup, and displayed more life and personality in 30 seconds than we saw from Winstead's Hera this entire series. Since we know MEW can act, I don't necessarily blame her completely, but definitely some.

As I said earlier in the thread, I LOVE Rebels, those characters, and I really, really wanted to love this show. I tried to mentally give it the benefit of the doubt wherever possible, but I just reasonably couldn't after a point. I hope that whatever follows this (if anything is allowed to), it improves a lot. Dave Filoni's creative output is at that dangerous tipping point where he's about to follow his mentor GL into the trap of discarding 'entertainment' in favor of going way too deep into his own head.

My score for this series: 5/10.

Regarding Sabine: Did I miss something, somewhere?

She went to not being able to move a cup one moment, to suddenly blocking all incoming blaster bolts with her lightsaber and Force-throwing Ezra a quarter mile into the landing bay of a star destroyer the next. What in the ever loving hell?

She felt. She didn't think. She used her instincts.

As Kanan noted she has the Force but was conflicted. Now she is less conflicted and able to do.

Yup. And I'm all in for it. I recall (and was thinking of this as I read the various litanies of grievances against Filoni around the 'net.) a quote from Tolkien to Lewis talking about the lack of stories they enjoyed being published. So, they decided to write their own. And while it took time for Lord of the Rings to catch on and become what we know it today, it definitely did. So, while this might not be the greatest (or whatever measure is used now) I found it entertaining, mythological, and engaging. No, I don't know the Rebels characters; seen one or two episodes, and a handful of scenes (mainly Maul vs. Obi-Wan). I was still engaged and enjoying Ahsoka. Bring on the next one, whenever it comes!

I enjoyed the series well enough, but it left me at odds due to it being nothing more than a giant set up for something else down the line. Really wanted some sort of conclusion, instead it was just one giant "To Be Continued".... 6.5/10 from me
